I work at an auto repair shop. This was a customer's vehicle. The transfer case was not disengaging 4WD, but communicating to the computer that it had. The grinding on the differential alerted us to this problem. Used transfer cases run around $500, and the best we could find had 80k miles. So we decided to rebuild the customer's existing transfer case, since it only had 23k on it. However, the damage to the front end was done, though this stopped it from getting worse. Rebuilding the case was about $100, but many hours in labor. The customer didn't save much money going with the rebuilt, but he did save himself at least 60k miles of use.
