Blazer 6-cyl

  • Manual transmission
  • 100,000 miles
The contact owns a 1996 Chevrolet Blazer. The contact was driving approximately between 40-45 mph on a country roadway. There was pressure applied to the accelerator pedal, followed by an unintended increase of acceleration. The driver was able to resume to normal operation. In addition, the "engine" warning light illuminated on the instrument panel intermittently. The identical failures occurred on three separation occasions. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic for inspection. The head gasket was blown as a result of the failures. The vehicle was repaired for the malfunctions. The failure mileage was 100,000. Updated 08/24/10. The consumer stated there were 2 incidents of the accelerator sticking; putting in the clutch and kicking the accelerator corrected the problem at the time. On January 19, 2010 a piece from the cruise control came loose on the engine and the accelerator became stuck in the open position. Updated 08/25/10

This was the second complaint consumer filed on same issue on same vehicle. This was the second time vehicle had malfunctioned, and consumer did not have the ODI number for the original failure. Consumer stopped at a red light with vehicle in drive engine rpms red lined and brake pedal went to the floor. Vehicle then started pulling away and going through red light. Consumer pulled vehicle into park and vehicle stopped moving, and engine red lined until it stopped on its own after about two seconds. Consumer tapped the gas pedal a few times with vehicle in park and vehicle went back to normal idle. When this happened consumer was not in the same place as the last time but vehicle acted exactly the same as last time.

This is my second report for the same problem in the same vehicle. The first occurrence was in may, 2001. (see ODI id 561620) the most recent occurrence was 1/25/02. In this case, I was driving 30 mph and accelerated slightly to change lanes. As soon as I pressed the accelerated, it depressed to the floor of the vehicle, causing a dramatic increase in speed. I pressed the brake, but it was rock-hard and did not depress one bit. Remembering the previous occurrence, I shut off the engine and coasted to a stop. Only after I reached a complete stop did the brake pedal depress for me. I restarted the engine and it ran smoothly, so I drove to the nearest parking lot and inspected the ccruise and accelerator cables. They were clean and in no way kinked or appeared to have stuck for any other reason. The last time this happened, I drove to a local service shop, where my intelligence was questioned and the whole incident dismissed as driver error. Took the vehicle to the dealership shortly thereafter, and was told that since they could not duplicate the problem, they could not fix it. I fear that I am stuck with an otherwise nice, low mileage deathtrap. It is the primary means of transportation for (pregnant) me and my 4-year-old. Must one or all of us be injured or die for this to be taken seriously? if I choose to sell it, I certainly feel a moral obligation to let any potential buyers know what has happened. Please help me! and this time, please send the signature form (I did not receive one last time) that allows you to report this to the dealership and manufacturer.

Transmission was slipping out of gear when accelerating from stop or RPM's will rev high, but vehicle will not move as fast as it should. Consumer took vehicle back to Pontiac dealer where vehicle was purchased, and was told a power train control module needed to be replaced. Advised consumer to go to a Chevrolet dealer to perform repair because it still fell under manufacturer's warranty. Consumer took vehicle to Chevrolet dealer, and was told a tsb was issued for a harness jumper kit which was causing the defect. Chevrolet dealer did not inspect vehicle to determine if that was the actual cause.
