I heard replacing the fuel pump fixes this but it didn't so the needle will bounce at random. It definitely slowed down after replacing the fuel pump but it didn't go away. It happens when driving on the freeway the needle just jumps then goes back into place. WEIRD! Like I said it slowed down and we only replaced the fuel pump because it actually went out but this bouncing needle thing never really went away.

Fuel gauge works fine until it drops down to 1/4 full, then just sits at 1/4 until you run out of gas. Just before you're down to the last gallon, the needle drops to empty and the light comes on. You'd better be mighty close to a gas station at that point. I've had some close calls. Unacceptable.
Not only is this a pain in the butt (remembering to reset the trip odometer), but it's very damaging to the fuel pump to consistently run it when the tank is below 1/4 full. The gasoline itself cools the pump, and prevents premature failure. Replacing the pump assembly is about $1000.00 at the dealership. Ouch!
Most likely the problem is in the float assembly, inside the tank. Rather than shell out 600 bucks to replace it, I'll trudge on until the fuel pump goes out (another common problem) and replace the entire pump/sender module.
GM has obviously chosen to ignore this rampant problem and force the owner to pay for their factory defects. The amount of labor required to swap sending units is ridiculously high, yet they choose to go with the cheapest part available - one that can easily be designed better for a few bucks more. Blatantly defective design, and a potential safety hazard.
Where are the lawyers? Guess we know what camp they're in.
