About These NHTSA Complaints:
The NHTSA is the US gov't agency tasked with vehicle safety. Complaints can be spread across multiple & redundant categories, & are not organized by problem. See the Back button — blue bar at the very top of the page — to explore more.
Purchased a 2000 Chevy. Camaro with only 50K miles two months ago. Three weeks ago I was finding that it would not start right away when hot and my gas gauge is not working. If the car was left overnight, in the morning it would start fine. The cause is a bad fuel pump, it loses pressure when hot but here is the real problem. The pump and sending unit is in the gas tank and I have to replace it with a GM unit, after market would be stupid and as you read on you will understand why. The fuel pump is $795, the exhaust system and the rear axle/suspension needs to come off to take the tank out. This is 5 hours of work according to my mechanic. It is going to cost over $1,100 to change this pump. There is no sane reason why a fuel pump should fail with only 50K miles on the car the car has never been abused, fact is that the original owner only drove it once a month and he is 58 years old so he does not abuse a car.
