About These NHTSA Complaints:
The NHTSA is the US gov't agency tasked with vehicle safety. Complaints can be spread across multiple & redundant categories, & are not organized by problem. See the Back button — blue bar at the very top of the page — to explore more.
My 2001 Camaro with less than 37K miles was taken to the dealership for new brakes. No reason I took car to dealership other than I wanted new brakes though nothing squeaked & I had no trouble. I did not expect to be told I needed new rotors as the dealership informed me the current rotors were too thin and I needed to replace them as well as the pads and brake linings. I was stunned as the car is hardly driven but a mere 8 miles round trip to work & back the last two years. I would have thought the other California dealership car was taken too just 7 months prior for brake inspection at 33,713 would have advised of impending issue? in reviewing the brake inspection paperwork dated 7/24/05 I clearly noticed the techs lack of attention to even filling in the proper boxes ie: Brake linings. The $1100 spent to fix problem is not an issue. Its the safety issue! love the car & have had 3 (95,97 & 2001) but am leary to drive it with what appears to be an engineering problem with rotor/pads and GM is ignoring it" Ford ignored their problems with tires for years and how many people died"

Have had 2 sets of rotors on this car since purchased. Now needs another set. Warranty will no longer cover this. Car is driven less than 20 miles per day, and currently has 28K on the 3rd set of rotors, dealer claims this is normal. This is not normal!! car should not be having these problems. It is a performance car, and should it be driven like one, the rotors may heat, warp and cause a hazardious condition that may cause an accident or death!. dealers have many complaints, & so does Chevrolet, why are they doing nothing about this?

Disk brake rotors. The disk brake rotors warp so often that they constantly need turned or replaced. I have had them turned at approx 11000 miles and they already need attention again. They make intermitant noise and you can feel the wobble when you go to stop. Looking on the internet this is a very common complaint with this vehicle and the brake rotors.

I have problems with the rotors on my 2001 Camaro. They keep warping. I had them turned 04/25/2002 and now they are warping again I only put 200 miles on since I turned them.

The rotors on* Camaros sinc approximately 1998 are faulty. However, the 2001 and 2002 models seem to be suffering the most frequent failures. The rotors on my 2001 Z28 warped and were serviced under warranty at 6,500 miles. Already, at 11,000 miles, they are warped again. I do not race or autocross this vehicle, so oem parts should be more than sufficient. I contacted my dealershi again and was told (off the record, of course) that the oem rotors for the Camaro are poorly designed and don't match up with this car. They advised me to purchase an aftermarket set of rotors from an automotive parts store and not to use oem parts. They also will not warranty the rotors a second time. Considering the fact that the dealerships are telling the customers that the stock rotors are not matched to the car, Chevrolet should issue a safety recall. If the rotors are warping prematurely, then they are most certainly subject to premature failure and could cause a fatal accident. I can provide you with probably 50 other documented cases of the oem rotors warping at an accelerated rate. I'm hopting that NHTSA can put some pressure on GM to fix this problem before it causes a fatality.
