Driving down I-95 in Florida during lovebug season, I'm using my wipers as normal when there's a large CRACK and the drivers side wiper arm starts dragging.
When I lifted the arm from the windshield, it felt like it was floating beneath the cover and no longer secured. Once I got it home and popped the cover up, I saw the plastic that went into the metal pipe of the wiper transmission had SNAPPED... or actually re-snapped. At some point it had broken and someone used a drywall screw to hold it together. I got this vehicle used from the dealer fresh off of being leased. Nobody has had any business under there since I've owned the car in 5 years. So either the previous driver or the dealer did this.
I called the dealer to see how much it would cost to replace the transmission. $155 I'm told. Trying to avoid paying that, I attempt a couple of repairs myself. Both failed and I decided to bow down to the dealer and pay the piper. With the part and labor, it's $250.
I should note that one of my repair attempts included putting in a new wiper transmission. I got it off eBay and the auction (plus the compatibility drop down menu) said it should fit my 07 Cobalt. I got the part and at a glance it's the same part... but the plastic is now metal. I guess they figured out that the plastic wasn't holding up. It didn't fit. The pipe on my transmission bends one way and this bent the other. So Chevy also decided to change the style and shape of this thing.
What a freaking nightmare. Lovebug season has passed, we've been getting a lot of rain, and I've been without windshield wipers.
