Air bag lite keeps coming on and off while driving it started 10/1/2019

"takata recall" and brakes

Air bag warning light on dash is stuck on. No obd codes noted. Air bags are serious business and I think GM should fix at no cost!
- Colorado Springs, CO, USA
Upon startup the airbag system will go through a check and the airbag light will stay on if a fault is found. The opening and closing of the extended cab doors will over time cause the airbag wires to snap into or break causing the airbag warning light to stay on. The airbags may not deploy if there is an accident and people may not even know that with the airbag light being on if that means the airbag system is working properly or not at all.

The contact owns a 2006 Chevrolet Colorado. While starting the vehicle, the air bag warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to a dealer who diagnosed that the seat belt pre tensioner and a low voltage wire needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired; however, the failure recurred. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 60,000.

Prepared on behalf of my father, who is the primary driver. On 2/22/2014 it was noticed that the airbag warning lamp became illuminated. Dtc indicated concern in driver's seat belt pretensioner circuit. Additional diagnosis also identified that LH rear speaker was inoperative as well. Wiring harness was inspected, identified fractured wires within the conduit boot between LH rear access door and body. The access door on this vehicle is opened and closed approximately twice per day. Basic online research identified many consumer complaints for this exact condition. Additional research through NHTSA consumer complaints identified a minimum of 15 unique complaints which identified wiring concerns, on extended cab vehicles between the access door and body, resulting in incapacitated SRS systems. 10 of the 15 identified complaints specifically identify; broken, cut, or disconnected wiring failures. This failure occurs through normal operation of the vehicle. Please investigate the trend that is evident for this safety concern.

I own a 2006 Chevy Colorado extended cab. The air bag readiness light stayed on after starting the vehicle. According to the manual, if the air bag readiness light stays on after you start the vehicle, it means the airbag is not in working order. The airbags may not inflate in a crash or they could inflate without a crash. This is a safety problem. I am concerned that the airbag would not deploy if involved in a crash. I am also concerned about having the air bag deploy under normal driving. There is a wiring harness that travels through the hinge of the rear door that appears to be a problem. The opening and closing of the rear doors has caused the wires to break. This rear door gets opened maybe 1 out of every 10 times the vehicle is entered/exited. Since the problem involves the airbags I thought it would be best to take it to the dealership for them to repair. Since there has not been an recall issued, I have had to pay for this myself.

The contact owns a 2006 Chevrolet Colorado. The contact stated that while driving approximately 35 mph he crashed into a vehicle that turned in front of his vehicle. The air bags did not deploy. The vehicle was towed to a tow yard. The police reported to the scene and a report was filed. The contact was suffering from neck pain after the crash but had not sought medical assistance. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The vehicle was destroyed. The approximate failure mileage was 43,000. Updated 11/15/13

I own a 2006 Chevy Colorado extended cab. The wiring harness that controls the air bags, interior lights, and stereo speakers keeps breaking. I was told that it was a defect from the factory. The wires run between the cab and rear doors. I had it fixed under warranty in 2008 and again in 2009. My warranty expired right after the second fix. I have had to fix it myself twice since then. This is a safety issue since the air bags are inoperable when the wires break. I am sure there are several hundred of these trucks on the road with defective air bags since most people will not fix it. I would expect Chevrolet to extend the warranty to 100,000 miles for this problem. I would also expect GM to correct the issue so it doesn't happen again.

: the contact stated while driving the engine revs at all speeds. The vehicle has been to the dealership twice for repairs to the engine. They replaced the accelerator pedal and throttle body, but the problem still exists. Additionally, the passenger side airbag light illuminated. Although the dealer was alerted no appointment for inspection was made.
