stabilitrac stops working while driving
Scenario 1 - Bought the truck used from a Ford Dealer in July 2016. Sometime in August it failed to start and gave different warnings each time, first for the Stabilitrac, then for the 4 wheel drive, then for the steering assist, then check engine, each time the key was turned and the starter was not engaged. Finally it started with no warnings except the check engine light was still on; otherwise nothing was wrong. This happened only once.
In September I noticed the heater wasn't working. I scheduled an appointment with the local Chevy dealer to have it fixed under warranty and also for a 15K mile check. The day before I took it in Scenario 1 occurred, again. So, I asked the dealer to look at both issues. The heater was working the day I brought it in, so I told them they didn't have to worry about that part. They did all the other 15K mile checks and said the truck was good to go
On October 17 I brought the truck back in because the heater hadn't worked since being serviced in September, and Scenario 1 had occurred, again. I told them to look at the heater, but it worked that day, too. I also told them about Scenario 1. They didn't fix the heater because they said there was nothing wrong with it and they told me Scenario 1 was not covered under warranty.
On October 26 the heater still wasn't working and Scenario 1 occurred again, this time while driving on a busy street. I was able to get off the street and go through the starting ritual and got back on the road.
The next day I called the Ford dealer who sold me the truck and told the salesman my local chevy dealer would not honor the warranty he had included with the sale of the truck. He suggested I go to another dealer. So, I got the truck in to a GMC dealer affiliated with the Ford dealer and they serviced a recall on the AC which they said would fix the heater. They found all the error codes from Scenario 1 but because they were "historical" did not address the Scenario 1 problem. They recommend I drive it for 500 miles and "see what happens". I'm going to get the truck from them right now.
Update from Dec 2, 2016: It's been over a thousand miles and the HVAC recall seems to have been the problem. No problems with anything since then. WooHoo!
Update from Jan 20, 2018: It's baaack! 1/17/18 - 23 turns of the key before the engine ignition would engage the starter. No cranking, no sounds before that. Engine started but stabilitrac and 4WD warnings came on. Electronics were wacky - no backup camera, no gear indication ("D", "R", etc) on dash. Turned engine off. Started 4 more times with all the electrical problems. On the fifth start the electrical problems were gone except for a general check engine light.
Coming home the electrical system had another 'fit" on the tri-state tollway. Speedometer and tachometer went to zero. Stabilitrac stopped working. Also reduced power - I had to almost floor it to keep up speed enough to get off to the side of the road. Once again, stopping and restarting several times brought everything back to normal.
I had made an appointment for the next day to get the oil changed. Instead, I had them try to figure out the electrical thing. The GMC dealer said the battery had low voltage and had to be charged. They thought that could be the problem. The diagnostics showed all the faults, but their only explanation was the low voltage of the battery. We had just gone through a long cold snap, but I had checked the charging few times and saw 14+ volts.
Since mine is the only electrical complaint on a 2015 Colorado I can find I can see it's time to part with this lemon.
