Colorado Extended Cab Z71 V6

  • Automatic transmission
  • 24,500 miles

What we thought was the smell of a passing vehicle's exhaust turned out to be all of my trucks engine oil spraying into the engine bay and seeping onto the hot exhaust pipe. Once I pulled over to see the issue I saw the "bubbling crude" all over the ground under the truck. I opened the hood to see that the high pressure pump sprayed oil on just about every point of the engine bay. Oil on pulleys, belts, covers, wires, you get the picture. We called a tow truck and we began our "what the hell just happened" search on line. It turns out that this is a somewhat common occurrence with this model. Thankfully the truck was still under warranty as it has 24,500 miles on it. The Chevy dealership took care of the towing expenses as well as the repair.

I called around to several dealerships to inquire about the issue, and each and every dealership service department was not only familiar with the issue, they admitted to completing this problem on a vehicle within a week of the call. I haven't found any recall notices or developments on line yet, but I can't imagine that this can continue without sparking some kind of recall response.

On a final note; once my truck was repaired I asked about the likelihood of this occurring again and the answer was "The crystal ball does not yet have an answer for the question". It seems to me that there is an expectation of recurrence on the part of the service manager's part. Too bad, I actually liked my little truck up to this point.
