My Corvette as well as many others from 97-04 suffer from the active handling ABS/traction control system going bad. The part is known as the ebcm. When it goes bad (if cruise is engaged) the car will disable cruise control suddenly causing car to slow down. Also, when the system fails while moving it cause cause uneven brake feeling and you loose the ABS and traction control systems. GM has discontinued the parts required to repair this and this issue has been major safety concerns for many years now affecting many 97-04 Corvettes. Also a part of this system is the steeling wheel position sensor which is also discontinued. Swps can send wrong info to the other computers and the car will make erroneous 'corrections' that can lead to brakes being applied at any moment while driving.

The vehicle was parked in a parking space in a housing area, placed in park, at the time the ignition was about to be turned off. The car took off and flew over the parking barrier, over a hedge and into a tree. The car side swiped a pole which demolished the entire left side of the vehicle, the car came to rest against a tree, striking the left front. The vehicle was still in park, the rear wheels were still spinning, when the driver was finally able to turn off the key, get out and seek help. The air bags did not work either.

Car accelerated wide open throttle on its own. At 115 mph on city street I put trans in neutral and turn off key. Had no power brakes or ABS; no power steering. Was able to stop car and turn off to side road and stop without accident. Towed to dealer. Dealer and GM tech support could not find problem. Dealer paid for tow and repair attempt although out of factory warranty. Took vehicle and next evening [06/07/2001] defect reoccured but I shut it shut it down before high speed was reached. Car cannot be saely driven without concern for personal safety and safety of public. What do I do?

While driving with cruise activated at 62 mph, active handling system engaged momentarily pulling car sharp right. This has happened seven times and the auto has been in the shop twice, most recently last month, for this problem. Technicians claim they can't find any faults with the vehicle or information on other reported incidents. This has a potential to cause an accident and I must have it fixed. Please help in any way possible. ODI id 709456 sounds like it may be the same problem but doesn't have enough information, readable, to determine if it is. Is there some way I can get information on his problem and remendy. Thanks for any help you may provide. P.S. the vehicle was purchased at hendrick Chevrolet in cary, nc but being worked on by wyatts in Virginia, where I live. Thanks.
