problem #5

Corvette 8-cyl

  • Automatic transmission
  • 7,500 miles
Oil consumption is above normal for a new engine. I have experienced the consumption of more that one quart per 1000 miles. Dealer initially stated that this was normal for a new engine and would improve after a good break-in period. Problem remains. Research has shown that there is an acknowledged problem with excessive oil consumption. Catalytic converter and exhaust pipes show significant black oily residue. Concerned about potential fire from catalytic converter. Also concerned about environmental effects. Chevrolet needs to take positive action to resolve issue.

The vehicle is equipped with 4 catalytic converters which cause excessive heat build up--to the point that the rear under deck storage compartments are useless for storage of any heat sensitive equip. Or material-can't store a laptop in compartment when traveling-or discs or floppys, etc.--the back bumper gets hot enough to distort around both mufflers. Chevrolet maintains that this is normal......the 4 cat system is no longer put on these vehicles, yet Chevrolet refuses upgrade. Cure for warped rear bumper, per Chevrolet is to use a heat gun to heat and straighten warped area"??"
