problem #1

Equinox 4.2L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 121,000 miles

I purchased my Equinox 2 years ago. When I bought it, I also got an extended warranty, as I sometimes need to travel to save an animal. I am also on a very fixed income due to disabilities.

On December 18, 2024 my equinox started acting really strange, and the check engine light came on. I had a mechanic friend hook up an OBD to get the code so I could go back to the dealers with it. The mechanic said that the code was for the timing chain. So I called the dealers and got the vehicle in right away. By the time I got there, ALL of the oil had leaked out. I had checked the oil before I took it in. It was low, but still drivable. By the time I got the 3 miles to the dealership, all of the oil was gone.

Two days later the manager of the service department called me and told me that water had gotten into the orifice and froze, which blew the rear seal.

The manager of the service department did have the repairs done (without telling me), and initially told me that it was going to be about $1800. So I had financing secured for this amount. The dealership had my vehicle for just over 3 weeks, doing the repairs. According to the technician, this is a flaw with these vehicles. My vehicle was also involved in an accident that I was never told about. So there were a couple hiccups referring to the accident. Come to find out, my extended warranty would NOT cover any of these repairs. Even a Goodwill Warranty would not cover the repairs through the warranty department.

Thankfully the dealership came back to me and let me know they THEY were going to cover ALL of the repairs because I had spent so much on the warranty and even more on other things that I was misled about. So I did get my vehicle back, with the dealership eating the cost of all of the repairs. But I am wondering how long it will be until this happens again! And I'm PRAYING that I'm not on the road if/when it happens again.

This is a flaw the GM should correct for the consumers!
