Equinox LT/FL 2.4L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 62,000 miles

I purchased the 2017 Chevy Equinox in Aug of 2020. No problems initially, Then I noticed my oil usage was increasing. I didn’t notice any drips on the pavement, but I began adding oil in between oil changes. Still couldn’t figure out what the problem was until my son had a look underneath the car and noticed the exhaust was leaking oil. Ding, Ding, Ding…now we definitely know there is a problem. After researching, I find there is litigation in Florida concerning excessive oil consumption. I contacted GM, Chevy and the dealership where the car was purchased and wouldn’t you know NO ONE knows ANYTHING about this issue!! It had been a known problem since 2019 and yet I am suppose to cough up the money for “diagnosis” and repair.

Chevy should be responsible, but they are going to keep their mouths shut until these cars have all hit the graveyard. I’m 73 years old and I’m concerned that I will be out on the road when this thing dies or catches on fire. This was suppose to be my last vehicle…and by the way, I am still making payments on it! Catch me on the flip side because now there are more problems with it.

Equinox LS

  • Automatic transmission
  • 104,000 miles

I just had my oil change less then 2 weeks ago. My Mechanic told me there was not much oil that came out and it was very dirty. I ALWAYS have my oil changed every 3,000 miles like clockwork. On Christmas eve 12/24/2022 I was going to my aunt's tor the holidays when the temp was 16 degrees outside. I started my car with my electric car starter. When I went out it looked like it was really smoking from exhaust and did not smell correct. I thought because the cold weather it was that. I was pulling out of my driveway I heard a couple of loud bangs sounded like it came from my rear. I drove to my aunt's which is about 7 miles and every time I stopped it smelt bad in my car. My son in law saw all the oil under my car and checked the oil and there was a very little.

I left my car there and today I called my mechanic n told him. Also, my son in law told me that there are problems with the year of my car about oil consumption. I bought the car used from a dealership with 84,048 and was never told about this problem. Now I am a health care worker who goes to people's homes and how I am supposed to get there. I am a traveling nurse. I need a reliable car for my job. Could someone please email me or text me what am I supposed to do. I still am paying for my car for 3 more years.

SUDDEN LOUD ENGINE SHUTTER/JERKING AT SLOW SPEED OR ON STARTUP FELT LIKE ENGINE WAS RUNNING ON TWO CYLINDERS. AFTER A FEW SECONDS SHUDDER WOULD STOP. CAR RAN OK FOR A COUPLE DAYS THEN LOUD SHUDDER AGAIN. I TOPPED UP ENGINE OIL BUT PROBLEM PERSISTED. A WEEK LATER. OIL LEVEL WAS DOWN AGAIN, BUT NO OIL LEAK FOUND. I CHANGED OIL AND FILTER, CHECKED FOR ERROR CODES (NONE). I SEARCHED INTERNET AND FOUND EXACT COMPLAINTS FOR 2.4L ENGINE. I BORROWED A CAR. I DO NOT TRUST THIS CAR. SOMETHING VERY WRONG WITH DRIVE TRAIN.

Equinox 2.4L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 49,000 miles

Was running fine, then in late October it started having a rattle when the car was put in gear. No problems with exhaust hangers. After reaching, I checked oil level, even though it was not due for an oil change for 2500 miles. The car's oil was 3 quarts low. No leaks on garage floor, oil life monitor said oil life was at 70%. Had oil change, full synthetic as always, and I always do regular changes and maintenance. Still using 1qt of oil every 1000 miles. Would love to GM fix this since it appears this is problem with all Equinoxs with this engine.

Equinox LT 1.4L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 75,000 miles

At the time of purchase, I was aware of the Equinox having oil consumption issues in the past. However, I was assured this problem had been corrected and was no longer an issue with the Equinox 1.4 engines. Seems like when I reached 75,000 miles, which truly were all highway miles as we live in Dundalk MD, and my wife worked for a day care center in Westminster MD which is a 100 mile round trip daily, at the 75,000 mile mark it began at a quart between oil changes and is now a quart every few hundred miles. I personally change my oils, always with a filter, always full synthetic dexos and always at 5000 miles. Of which it was allowed to go up to 7500 miles due to the high grade oils I use. At this point I don't know what to do or who to speak to since the selling dealer just states, I'm so sorry, there are no recall and you, me, are out of warranty...

Please help if possible. Sincerely, Thomas Denk Sr, tdenk@comcast.net

Equinox

  • Automatic transmission
  • 47,150 miles

This Equinox is literally running out of oil by the time it gets down to 40%. There isn't any indication that the oil is low or completely out. I am having to check the oil every 3rd day to make sure it isn't empty. I bought this vehicle from Carmax in 2019 and they should have known there were oil consumption problems.

Equinox LT V4

  • Automatic transmission
  • 120,000 miles

My fiance was going to the bank and saw a trail of oil. He stopped and saw oil all up the back of the SUV then he saw it pouring out of the car. Within minutes, the car was empty of all oil. We had to have it towed over 30 miles home. It was a Sunday, and I knew the dealership was closed and it would be a fortune! My mechanic picked it up and stated he replaced the engine and transmission seal.

Called the dealership and they said no recalls, Chevy said I can do an oil consumption test with the dealership. One service man giggled at that thought, but did one anyways. They want me to come every 3,000 miles. I checked my own oil and tracked the level with the mileage. It will use about about a quart, every 1500-2000 miles. I put that in my car between oil changes. I get my oil changed at every 3,000 even though the gauge states it is at 50%.

I use a private company now to change my oil because of the cost at every 3,000 miles. I drive a lot, love my car, but know that it should not use that much oil that quickly. I have had clunkers in the past that used that much and more, because they had a bad engine, or cracked head.

Would just love Chevy to acknowledge the problem, fix the problem, and I can have my car back!
