HHR LT 2.4L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 79,000 miles

The 2006 Chevrolet HHR I own has to be one of the biggest lemons I have ever owned! It only has 79,000 miles on it and the brake rotors rusted so badly they warped and had to be broken apart for removal! I have never seen rotors that rusted like this! But my biggest complaint is my current problem. The Fuel Supply Line rusted and is leaking behind the drivers seat area. I can get the leak to stop by loosening the gas cap and de pressuring the tank! The dealer wants me to replace the entire line which would be a $600 fix! I have never heard of or seen such a terrible design and problem that is so dangerous in my life. Chevrolet should be required to fix this manufacturing defect!!

HHR 2 LT 2.4L

I was driving and noticed a strong fuel smell. In the few minutes it took me to park and walk to the driver side rear wheel a reasonably large puddle had formed and there was a near continuous drip of gasoline. I moved my car out of the driveway, (my neighbors were shooting fireworks less than twenty feet away, it was a small miracle there was not a fire), and drove it to the mechanic the next day. My mechanic confirmed that the fuel line had rusted through, and noted that due to the design of the car water would pool keeping the fuel line submerged most of the time. Still waiting on the parts, it would seem for some reason they are in high demand. I wonder why...

After looking online and seeing all complaints about rusted out fuel line's safety should be at the utmost. I know I am just the little guy but someone should have GM look at recall. Please help people that cannot buy new cars by helping us stay safe in what we have. Again this is on 2006 Chevy HHR. Thanks to all who care!!!!

fuel lines rusted out and began leaking fuel lines rusted out and began leaking

I had my HHR for 8 years and 180,000 miles. With MANY annoyance. On April 18,2015 I was literally on my way to trade it in ,with my 2 kids accompanying me, when while driving on the freeway my car started to stall out and overheat. I pulled over nothing white smoke from under hood. Immediately after pulling over a fellow driver (a stranger an angle) pulled over parking far from me and running back towards my vehicle yelling something at me, with freeway traffic I couldn't make out his words at first. Suddenly I heard him clear "get out, your cars on fire" . In shock I started scrambling out of car grabbing what could and screaming at kids to get out. My daughter had on headphones and was still sitting in car when I got out and turned she was still buckled in with door shut. I quickly ran back to car dropping my belongings and opened door and pulled her out. Luckily my children were both older , 14 and 12. The picture that shows flames was taken after we ran about 29 ft. away and turned around literally within 2 mins. of all of us being out of vehicle. Thank God I had just fixed not 4 months earlier right before Christmas and for $500 a problem that made it impossible to open drivers side door from inside OR outside and made it necessary to slowly and haphazardly climb through to passenger side and out that door.

Luckily my son had my purse! I lost ALL my CDs and items in bag I dropped when helping my daughter out. Car was a total loss and so I lost my trade in. I didn't get a fine from insurance because foolishly I had recently changed to liability only insurance.

This car is a DEATH TRAP and very DANGEROUS , not to mention costly.

Please do not buy a 2006 HHR.

fuel lines rusted out and began leaking fuel lines rusted out and began leaking

How much more issues is HHR gonna have, now I have to deal with rusted fuel lines. I just finish repairing front end noise which is a common problem, and now fuel lines. The other problems I have is, ABS sensors, transmission traction control, door handles broken (bad design) have to wind window down and open from outside and now rusted fuel lines. Is it worth keeping this car with all of Chevy issues with this model???

Like the others, had gas smell coming from back of car. Paid for an inspection from my mechanic. Both fuel lines are badly rusted...too rusted for age of car. Bands that support gas tank also rusted. After a week now, the gas fumes are now on the inside of the car. I've contacted GM. They want a dealership inspection that I have to pay for. I want to know how widespread this is. My mechanic says poor design and location of fuel lines and cheap materials that are supposed to protect the fuel lines are the reason for the severe rusting. This should be a recall and repair. I've filed a complaint with the National Highway Traffic Safety Association (NHTSA), Anyone with this problem should do the same!

HHR LX 2.2L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 48,865 miles

We noticed the gasoline smell in January of 2015 but we thought it was caused by the frigid winter we were having. When the weather turned warmer in April, the smell seemed to go away for about 2 weeks and then it came back with and this time it was leaking very bad. It has gotten worse and our son found where the line has rusted pin holes and is leaking very heavily. This car has less than 50,000 miles on it and we have had to have the ignition replaced, the top clear coat of paint has bubbled up and peeled from the hood, we have gotten 2 other recalls on power steering and airbag; but only if they start acting up as they put it in the recall. Now this. I will never buy another Chevrolet.

This new of a car should not have problems like this. Overall its been an okay car but to know it might have blown up with my kids and my wife inside is very disturbing. If I don't have this issue fixed I will protest and my family and friends will never buy a GM product again. I wouldn't put my name on this product. This is BS and lazy for kind of stuff like this to happen.

Returning from a drive from a near by city I parked the car in the garage and went in the house and watched the TV for a couple of hours. My wife went out to feed the dog and called me to the garage due to the strong smell of gasoline and asked me if I had spilled some gas and I stated no. The gas smelled like it was around the car. I looked around the car then found a large puddle of gas in front of the driver's rear tire. I crawled under the car and found both gas lines were leaking and were heavily rusted. I did manage to drive the car to the nearest repair shop and had them repaired costing me $238.00 dollars.

This really stressed me out, I have been driving used cares for 42years and never had an issue like this. This is very poor quality by GM along with both fuel lines running right beside the exhaust pipe with some insulation wrapped around the gas lines, this is where the lines were leaking. This will be the last GM vehicle I buy, very poor quality and poorly engineered. I think GM needs to recall all HHR just for this reason alone, not to mention all the other recalls they are having.
