Impala 3.8L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 159,000 miles

Dashboard lights to illuminate the speedometer and gas, the face plate to the radio, etc, when it's dark enough outside and the lights come on instead of the driving light, everything goes dark. Including when I open the door, the interior lights won't come on either. I needed a new battery and I thought that was going to take care of it as it was barely starting when I turned the ignition key. So I thought it would be the battery as well....nope!!! They still don't work when it gets dark out.

Yes, its a royal pain in my ass!!!! And I don't know what or how to go about fixing this glitch!

Impala 3.4L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 120,000 miles

The electrical problem continued for a year but it wasn't enough of a problem to spend the money to have it fixed. I then hit a deer 2 years ago and the electrical worked great for a year and now it has gone out again, along with the power to the driver's window and side mirror.

The Key stopped turning in the ignition. I replaced the switch and now some of the dash lights stay on and run the battery down. It would start the car at first but now will not start at all. When I charge the battery the E break light, check engine light, lights where it shows what gear it's in all stay on. There was only 3 wires that had to be disconnected and put back and I can't find a short anywhere.

Does anyone know what this could be? I need my car desperately and can't afford to have it taken to a dealer or repair shop.

Impala Not Sure V6/3.8L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 170,000 miles

When I bought my car the mileage light would not work, so I was not sure how many miles there actually was on the car. The paper the car lot gave me to take to my bank said 68,000. I asked the guy how he knew that was the mileage. He said the light come on every once in awhile, that it had a short. Ok I have driven this car for 7 mths. now and have until yet to see a light come on at anytime. The paper he gave me to take to get my tags said exempt.I like the vehicle so I just decided it really didnt matter how many miles, hey it runs good. I did a background check on the car and it had 171 thousand and something miles on it last report. That was in Feb. 2009. I do not know what the problem is. I havent checked the fuses yet, but thought I would eventually. Then I found this site and may be better off with the light not working, because seems like people are having problems with their Chevy impalas not starting. Who knows these lights may have been disconnected for a reason.Something to think about, huh.

Impala LS 3800

  • Automatic transmission
  • 144,000 miles

The dash lights are out most of the time, though not always. Also sometimes a separate intermittent problem is the turn signals will not operate unless the flasher signal is turned on a couple of times too. The dash light problem would cost over 600 dollars to repair through installation of a new dash board electrical circuit board.

These sorts of emergent high cost repairs for replacement of defective / failed electrical / computer circuit boards are a big drawback to more modern automotive and equipment design.

On the side we have a 2 and a half year old Bosh range which needed a new ceramic electronic igniter for 250 bucks. The Sears repairman said if the board goes out on either the new front load washer or dryer one is looking at 500 or more bucks if my memory is right. This all sucks and is poor design and quality control.

Update from May 14, 2011: the chevy mechanic online through justask said to try changing the headlight switch. this fix worked for $54 for the part delivered, and one hour of labor. all illumination came back and is stable to the dashboard backlighting and to all dashboard and radio lighting and switches, to the steering wheel switches illumination, to the switches on the drivers door control panel, and to the switches on the passenger door panel.
