While in the dealership for an oil change at 45,000 miles the service mgr suggested that I might want to have the gaskets changed as they saw a leak. Of course I thought it was just another fund raising effort for GM. Anyhow I googled the problem, stumbled across Car Complants.com,, started reading the Impala horror show on internal coolant leaks that caused thousands of $$$ in damage and mega-frustration. So, I decided on my next visit to take them up on the gasket and seal changeout but when the service manager said he would use original OEM seals and gaskets I said "but they're the culprits that are causing all the problems." Sarcastically he said, so what do you want me to do. I said use all Fel Pro gaskets/seals since they resist the destructive qualities of DexCool. His answer, but that's going to cost you $75 more. So what compared to $3000 - 4000 in repairs. 80,000 miles later no problems, no lost coolant, GM should have paid for all gaskets and seals to be replaced on a recall. But sometimes the integrity of corporate giants gets lost. In this case what goes around comes around in bankruptcy.

I hate to say it, but I am not fond of American cars. I bought this 2000 Chevy impala, cause my wife wanted a weekend car. so we bought the impala. we've only had it 5 weeks. every week something new, and engine light seems to always come on. first the alternator died, then serpentine belt went, then headlights went, then secondary air pump went, now manifold seems to be leaking antifreeze. I wonder what will happen within the next 5 weeks. sorry guys, but German and Japanese cars are better, even tho 80% of these cars don't have timing chains, but do have timing belts. they still last longer. better quality . Long Live Mercedes Benz.

Purchased this car just 6 weeks ago. First week it died had to be towed home. it sat for 10 days while we replaced every electrical component in the vehicle, finally we replaced the right combination and it ran. Oh but not without another problem cropping up. It started out as just a random smell of anti freeze but here we are just a couple weeks later going thru 12 litres of fluid a day. This car is necessary for work purposes and at this point can't really be parked until days off but it will be fixed and then I am done with this chev product. I obviously like GM and Buick, not so keen on Chev. This is my first and probably my last chev product.

Intake manifold gasket failure - coolant mixing with oil & leaking to ground at about 2.5 years & 15K miles. Luckily, I spent $1,000 for extended warranty or it would have cost me much more than that for repair. Cheap gaskets & use of both aluminum & steel in engine (dissimilar metals) causing gasket rub-out as they expand & contract differently. Not the only issue I've had with this car. Will never buy another GM product as long as I live but am stuck with it now as am out of work. Oh, did I mention - it's leaking oil again with only 75K miles! Piece of junk originally advertised as "piece of mind" quality vehicle. Garbage. Hello Honda!

My problem is that gm does not do anything to correct the problem. There is a way to fix the intake gasket problem with the the 3.1, 3.4 and 3.8 - get rid of the plastic gasket, that splits under heat, and use a copper gasket with rubber trim.

yea, your heater might stop working, or at least pass a terrible odor into your car.. what is that odor ? well, its your coolant, burning up on the motor, and you check your coolant level, black oily sludge.. i feel like ive seen this problem more than most mechanics, being the u proud gm owner that i am these days. every year ive had this car, ive had this 1000 dollar repair. who uses plastic to make a seal instead of rubber ? well, gm of course! when they want constant revenue to come in on their sold cars. i will never buy another gm product again. GOOD JOB GM. i also replaced the tranny at 50k miles, but thats on another complaint form. BOYCOTT GM! make them face this issue of poor craftsmanship. WE WILL NOT STAND FOR IT

I will never buy another vehicle without checking all available places such as Consumer Reports and AutoBeef to find out about potential problems. We have had our 2000 Impala for 5 years but we have really paid with repairs, brakes and more brakes, water pump, intake manifold gasket and a new transmission. The airbag light will not go off and we were told it would cost at least $100 to check it and correct it - no way, I put black tape over it.

Seems like this is a common problem. Techie almost admitted as much. If so, seems like Chevy might have some hidden warranty on this, but I have not found one - yet. Appreciate any info.
