this problem is covered in a GM service bulletin. GM doesn't want the shafts to be replaced, and the extended warranty services don't want to pay to have the part replaced either! They say that this is a normally lubricated part and it falls on the customer to pay to have a spacial kit installed to take care of the problem. It Is in fact NOT listed as something there needs attention on a regular basis. the noisy shaft started it's thing at about 13 K miles. They say this GM will pay for the dealer to fix the problem ONLY if addressed under the 3 year/36k mile original warranty. I have convinced them otherwise !

I bought the car new. Within a few months, there was a popping noise coming from the shaft when I would turn the wheel. The dealer applied some lube. About a year later, the noise returned. The dealer replaced the shaft. This was done under warranty. Now the same problem has returned, and the dealer says there is nothing they can do. They want over $400.00 to fix the problem. I called Chevrolet and complained that there is a continual problem with the steering column since I purchased the car new. They will not do anything to fix the problem. Chevrolet SUCKS. This is the last Chevrolet I will ever own.

I bought this car with 13,000 miles on it and it had a bad steering shaft at the time of purchase (made popping noise and you could feel it in the wheel) it was replace by dealer the first time but when bad again one year and three weeks later! Three weeks after warranty expired so they would not fix. I had a 60,000 mile extended warranty with land car but this part was not covered so I paid to have it fixed and now the car needs another one at only 34,000 miles. I have called GM Corp. on this matter and there is no recall despite what I have been told by many GM techs that this is a known defect!!!!!
