My 2001 3.4 Impala has 92,000 miles. During a recent trip the transmission started making gear whine noise. This occurred mostly in 2nd and up and is accompanied by harder than normal shifts. It seems to be only happening now when the car is fully warmed up and under moderate or greater acceleration. However, it doesn't do it consistently. When it's cold it seems to shift fine, and it doesn't make any noise. All scheduled maintenance has been performed on this vehicle. Does anyone have any ideas about what is causing this, and if it might be just the beginning of more serious trouble. Thanks.

I am having transmission problems such as crazy sounds and violent shifting. I am not going to replace the Transmission. I can put a reasonable down payment on a new car for that amount of money. Hell, I believe that when a car get's to this point it is time for a BMW. I will say that since I have owned this car I have replace the amp, power steering pump and the CAT converter. These repairs cost a large 1400 euro and I realized that a new car was in order. I am off to a BMW dealer. By By Chevy!!!!!!!

This Impala is my wife's car and as you can see it don't have many miles for a 2001. We have made three trips , one to California, two to Arizona and return to Virginia. Remaining miles are local. My wife began telling me of a noise in the transmition while it was in Park, of course being a man I told her it must be from normal wear and tear.

I also had a problem with the starter and it left her one day while delivering "Meals on Wheels" I took it to Hampton Cheverolet here in Hampton Virginia. There dia. stated there was no problem with the starter. I had it replace anyway just to be on the safe side and I don't like my wife stranded. They did what is called a FDCI courtesy inspection to include The engine, transmitionand all the rest of the things they look for. Not a thing wrong they said. The transmition still had that dry sound so I thought it was normal and I didn't like it. Cost of the replacement of the starter $486.00 Cost of the inspection N/C. Next day Wife said "I am not happy with this sound in the transmition area. (Listen to your wife)I have gone to a Transmition Repair place. A very good one I must say. He listened to it and said " I did one last week that has the same thing." He brought out a box with a planitary gear assy, showed me how it works and explained that the needle bearings at the end were worn out. He also said don't drive it, Go to GM see if there is a recall or any help for you wich I did. Back to Hampton Chevrolet they sad "there were no recalls or any help from GM".I ask about the cost? they said close to $3000.00 36 mo. warnity for a "CERT" what ever that is. The milage at the time was 39785 9/13/07 Thanks for listening, and we hope it don't have the same problems

Transmission started making noises when shifted into drive from park. Almost a dry noise. Never had problems with fluid leaks, fluid looked ok, never went low on fluid. Never had any symptoms at all. Car always worked well. happened suddenly. Transmission place said that the entire rear planetary gear was demolished, guy couldn't beleive the car was drivable still. They even took it for a test drive, and until they took it apart, they had no idea. They said there were no signs of abuse, (and there shouldn't be), but that GM has a lubrication problem to the back of the transm., and they made an adjustment for it. They have seen this in taxis with a couple of thousand miles, but not on one this 'new'. Guess I got the 'lemon'! UGH!
