I ignored the clunking in the steering for a while - but finally decided to get it fixed as I'm planning on keeping the car for a while longer.
It seems to be because of a poor design - the steering shaft has a bend in it. It's kind of a Mickey Mouse problem for such a high volume car.

Steering started clunking at 17,000 miles. Dealer replaced intermediate steering shaft twice and lubed it twice- all within 3 years! A year later, it's back. Now I've noticed my engine shifts whenever the steering wheel is turned!!!!!!!! Mechanic has never seen that happed before.

Okay, I started getting this clunking noise in the steering so I asked my shop foreman what it could be...answer: the intermediate steering sector (???). It either needed to be replaced or it could be greased, but not by me. I don't know if this was something that Chevrolet "experimented" with or if it was intentional, but I do know that I'll never be guilty of buying another GM product. By the way, the entire suspension system on this model is a piece of . Mushy, even after changing out the struts, is a nice way to put it.

Not knowing the exact problem and what could happen is vary annoying and frightening.

My regular mechanic said it was a broken "drag link". He did that and I still have the same complaint...which he calls "steering box chatter". It still "clunk-clunks" when I turn the wheel all the way left or right. It does not feel "solid" like it did when I got the car. I know the dealer will only see dollar signs if I bring it there...sooner or later it will cost me. I don't feel safe driving it...buy who can you trust these days to just fix the problem....

WELL YET ANOTHER PROBLEM ON MY 2002 IMPALA WITH 48,000 MILES. THERE IS A CLUNKING NOISE THAT COMES FROM THE STEERING WHEN I TURN THE WHEEL. I HAD THE CAR LOOKED AT AND THE DEALER SAID THERE ARE SO MANY OF THESE CARS THAT DO THIS BUT I WOULD HAVE TO PAY OVER 500,00 DOLLARS TO GET THE NOISE FIXED, I FEEL AS IF THIS CAR IS UNSAFE TO DRIVE. HOW COULD THE STEERING GET LOOSE AT ONLY 48,000. SO I AM PAYING CAR PAYMENTS AND GM AS ALWAYS COULD CARE LESS. WHAT IS IT GOING TO TAKE FOR THEM TO RECALL THESE CARS AND FIX THE DEFECTS,ALMOST ALL THESE CARS HAVE THE SAME PROBLEMS. WHY DO WE HAVE TO PAY BECAUSE THEY WERE TRYING TO BE CHEAP WITH THERE PARTS. AND AS ALWAYS GM COULD CARE LESS ABOUT HELPING IF THERE IS ANY LAWSUITS ABOUT THIS LET ME KNOW. GM SUCKS.
