I have the same problem and saw on the net and with my mechanical expert that the only solution was to put some oil in the shaft at each oil change, only 10 min job. And good for 5000 km.
Tired of this problem as the brake problems and suspension problems. And also have a motor head changed. I'm gonna buy a Toyota soon!

I had a 2000 Impala that had the same problem. My extended warranty ran out before I could get it fixed. This is definitely something they should recall!

had to have the intermediate steering shaft replaced at about 20000 miles. it made a loud clunk every time you took a hard left turn. The dealer said it was a common Impala problem, so why no recall? Car is crap!

I have heard of many others having this problem. In looking on the internet, I see I am not the only one with this issue. I have heard this is approx 300-350.00 to correct. If this is such an issue, I would have thought this would have been recalled. This has been a problem since I purchased this vehicle new, along with the squealing brakes, which I was told is always the case with GM brakes. I think initially they thought I was just feeling something in the steering that was not there. They have since found that I have a problem with my steering. Sister in law has an Impala and she had the same problem.
