Just wanted to add to the ever growing list of complaints to the 2002 Chevy Impala security light. Started happening to me about 3 or so months ago. Intermittent non-starts are becoming a pain in the ass. To echo everyone else, GM needs to issue a recall on this problem that they obviously know about!!!!!

Bought my 2002 Chevy Impala new. At around 36,000 miles, the transmission just quit working. Goodyear said needed a new transmission. Yelled and screamed in my pillow and bought a new one from the factory. Of course this happened JUST as it was out of warranty. No problems with new one, yet, but I only have 51,000 miles on my car now. Don't get out much!!

Hi,
I have an 02 Impala LS 3.8 just bought it about 5 months ago, I took it on a few trips and with only 112k i started having tranny problems 2-3 gear would be a harsh shift. i took it to a friend or mine to get a dignos on the car. the news broke my heart the tranny was going bad, either replace it with a new one or rebuilt ( 1600 rebuilt) (2000 to put a new tranny) i thought to myself how the F*ck does and 02 impala need a new tranny with only 112k on it!! with all its proper maintenance i gave it and, so did the past owner. GM is full of sh*t i don't know why the tax payers helped GM from falling, is this how they repay us for our help towred them; with a piece of sh*t tranny. I was a Chevy for many many year BUT KNOW I SAY SCREW GM AND ALL PIECE OF SH*T PARTS.... NEVER AGING WILL I BUY A CHEVY

The Impala is the worst car ever built. It is on par with the 1989 Hyundai Excel I once owned. The transmission had to be rebuilt after only 80,000. It would not accelerate out of first and second "gear" (it's an automatic tranny). Cost and arm & a leg (or $2,500). Don't buy this car.

I bought my Impala used the first week of April and in the middle of July the transmission just completetely died on me. There were no warnings or tell tale signs that this could happen. I get 5 minutes away from my job and it just quit. I was lucky to be able to pull over to the shoulder. To my way of thinking, after 86,000 miles a tranny should not go out like that. I have had other vehicles that after 200,000 miles the tranny still works as new. All I can say is thank God for that 2 year warranty I bought with the car. After 3 months it has already paid for itself. Too bad that is not the only problem. Remind me to never by a GM again.

This was the major problem with my impala. The transmission started slipping. Brought it in and after "it was fixed", the transmission fell out when they were testing their work. Luckily this happened at a GM dealership and GM paid to have my transmission rebuilt at an estimated cost of around $6000.

I just got this car at a dealership in April, and thank god I got the extended warranty. Here it is, only June, and I have to have the transmission rebuilt?! When I drove it, it sounded like an airplane... and it jerked into different gears... especially when going uphill.

Transmission was shifting hard sometimes and other times shifted smooth at times. One day my wife and I stopped to get gas and was starting off in 2nd gear. Would only shift to 3rd. Would go into reverse ok. Took to ammoco and had checked. It was electronic valves in transmission that are crap. They caused other parts to have problems. I had transmission rebuilt and cost was over $2100.00 I got new torque convertor off ebay for 90.00 they wanted 300. I got one from http://stores. ebay.com/QUALITY-CUSTOM-CONVERTER on ebay.
