Impala LS 3.8L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 79,000 miles

We just turned over 80k tonight (02/15/14) and my 2004 Impala has been giving us problems for about the last 6 months. The gauges - speedometer, tach and gas gauge have all been above and beyond the normal realm. Usually if you shut the car down, put it in park, turn the key off and on several times you can get it to go back to where it should be.

We've owned this car since it was new and this is a pain in the butt! We don't have the $ to get it fixed and it appears it is a problem that GM should've taken care of with a recall. Any other solutions.?

Impala 3.4L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 214,156 miles

Blinker Switch was replaced @20k (warranty)

Started with complete instrument cluster failure and also killed the battery once while at work @ about 160k miles. Found out that kicking hard underneath the left side of steering shaft while driving would restore functions, and gives me a sore foot. Also later (2yrs later), I got tired of that and went under the dash and pulled, twisted, yanked all the wire harness's coming from firewall in several directions hard, it sort of cleared up/acted up by doing this. Finally got it to stop acting up. But the other day (7/23/14), I encountered my A/C was not shutting off proper (indicator light was off, on AC though) then the speedometer said 110mph @ while at 60mph. Got home and disconnected the Plus + battery terminal for 10sec. then reinstall. Speed OK, AC OK now.

Also have to turn on/off the rear defroster to get noise out of the AM band on the radio for some time. Related to bumpy roads. I do believe the problem is in the wire harness connector's up at the instrument panel area as it was doing fine for 1 1/2 yrs (except radio-defrost bump to reset loss of AM signal still) after really yanking on the harness. 214k+ miles on this beast

Never notice Fuel or Temp gauges having reading problem except during full cluster loss.

Been a good car for me other than this, so far...

This problem started off gradually - first the speedometer went, then the gas gauge, then the tack, etc. Got a price of $700 + tax to get it fixed in Ontario at a dealer. It was just short of $500 in Florida at a dealer. Finally got it fixed with a cluster from a auto wreckers for $250. Poor quality is GM's moto.

Had problems for many years with the tachometer reading the incorrect speed, and sometimes the RPM meter had problems too. Someday I was bored at home and decided to look for a solution, found many videos detailing the problem and how the dealership asked for $500(sometimes more) to replace the whole dash and reprogram it. Also found how just replacing the stepper motor would work, and since some of the light bulbs were dead, I decided to try removing the dash and soldering the new steppers as well as light bulbs. It was not too hard to remove it. and the steppers where 5 dollars each on eBay. Replacement Part# X25.168. It has worked fine for this past week, and the new led bulbs, look great too. The only problem I had was, I scratched the interior light control when putting back the cover.

I have Chevy Impala 2004 LS.

The cluster panel has gone. There is a defect in this area that Chevy only fixed on certain models when they knew that most Chevy models were having the same problem.

I do not know how much gas I have, I do not know my speed (have to use GPS), all gauges are completely gone and the needles are all over the place.

Tried dealing with Chevy, however, they want to charge me $500.00 for this when they have already recalled certain models but did not include the Impalas.

Impala LS 3.8L

Speedometer failed. Made it look like I was going much faster than I was. When I slowed to 70 MPH cars on interstate were passing me at a high speed. Clocked speed between mile markers to calculate speed. This was a while ago so I don't remember the exact cost to repair but it was expensive and necessary.

Impala V6

On my way to work this morning I looked down to check how fast I was going and my speedometer said 80mph. I thought to myself no way, it feels like I'm only doing 40mph. When I stopped at the stop sign, it did not go down. So, a little bit unraveled, I called the Chevy division of GM and all they could tell me was that I did the right thing by calling and complaining and that the only way they can issue a recall is when they hit so many numbers of people calling in a complaining. Only then will they investigate the issue and post a recall. So by all means FLOOD THE CALL CENTER! One of the guys kept telling me to go to a dealership even after I explained that being a single mother, I didn't have the money. So please call them and complain, everyone who is having these problems deserves to have GM correct their mistakes. Not just me!!!

I'm frustrated that Blackie is still running well however there has been a few tickets on my driving record because my speedometer reads 0 . A few times I have run out of gas because the tank always reads 3/4 full. I know this cluster problem was replaced on my folks suburban and a coworkers Tahoe. So why not the Impala's.. perhaps cause we paid 10-20 grand less than them. I don't know ???

We bought this car in July of 2011 the problem started about 2 months later. I notified Chevy on line and went through a series of questions. they offered to buy the cluster but I had to pay to have them installed. That would have been okay but since i'm disabled income is very limited. They went so far as to ask me how many GM vehicles I had purchased. I replied with in the last 11 years I had purchased 9 GM products 4 which were new they said that didn't justify them paying for the installation. wow I guess they should have all been new. They also said they hadn't had many complaints on the Impala which must be a lie when all you have to do is Google it and many issues come up pertaining to cluster problems. Looks like its Ford for me the next time!!!!!!!

I have no way of knowing how fast I am going which is a danger to others, I have no fuel gauge and now my temperature gauge is going. My speedo is a safety issue the government should issue a repair or replace mandate to the dealers. I feel my other gauges should be covered as show to others many others would have the same problem. Chevrolet should not have its head in a dark place.
