- dealer replaced steering column (2 reports)
This problem may be covered under warranty. Ask your Chevrolet dealer.
I started to notice a "click" whenever I turned the steering wheel from left to right or right to left. I also noticed a significant "looseness" in the steering. Took the car to the dealership and they said all the grease in the column had leaked out and the entire column had to be replaced. They also found the antifreeze recovery tank was leaking along the seam so they replaced that too. GM picked up the tab for the rental car.

There was a clunking/clicking noise and feeling when turning the steering wheel either to the left or right (more pronounced when turning right). Felt like the steering was slipping, ever-so-slightly.
Found the following Technical Service Bulletin by doing some research online: TSB Number: 070235005 - Steering clunk noise felt, heard from steering column. Solution: Replace I-shaft
Printed it out and took it in-hand to the local Chevy dealer, who replaced the Intermediate Steering Shaft (covered under standard warranty). Noise and clunking disappeared.
According to Impala owners on online forums, Chevy has known about this design defect for a while, but chooses to replace them as the problem arises rather than redesign the entire assembly.
