This is the second time within 2 months that the rear window completely shattered while driving the vehicle, 2014 Chevy Impala, LT, on the highway. Google search shows several folks reporting similar experiences with LT and LTZ models, with some folks reporting it occurred to them more than 2 times. Additional research revealed that Chevrolet may have used electrical connectors, Metri-Pak 280 terminals, that were rated for no more than 30 amps maximum for the rear defroster yet placed a 40 amp fuse on this circuit. Some folks shared photographs of burnt connectors, located behind the front passenger kick panel.
Issue reported to Chevrolet and Gm dealer…complaint didn’t go anywhere, as the car is out of warranty. Dealer says they do not show any type of service bulletins regarding rear windows shattering and/or electrical issues related to overloaded or burnt connectors or wiring related to the rear defroster.

For the 2nd time in 6 months, my rear windshield shattered. Thankfully my insurance covers the replacement, but what a pain. No one can give a reason for this happening. The first time, I was in the car and heard the loud pop. This time, I got in, shut the door and the windshield fell in.

Sitting in my car, I heard a loud pop. Smelled something burning, turned around and saw my back window was shattered.

Now we are really aggravated! Rear window shattered again today when the trunk lid was closed for no apparent reason. Right at 3 years ago the EXACT SAME THING HAPPENED. It was very cold 3 years ago, but today the temperature was in the high 50’s.
Three years ago we wrote it off as a ‘freak’ occurrence. However, I do not believe in coincidences - I truly believe there is a design flaw or something like this to cause the window to break.

Rear window shattered for no apparent reason when trunk lid was closed. Technician was kind enough to repair the window on New Year’s Eve day.

Getting into vehicle after work. Shut drivers side door and the rear window glass "popped". Glass blew out as if there was too much pressure in the car when the door was closed.
Repair covered by insurance, but very annoying. Glass should be higher quality on a vehicle like this.
I have also seen this happen to other late model GM vehicles including a GMC Terrain and Chevy Volts.

The glass company I called for repair said she had just booked a 2015 Impala that the same exact thing happened to it. I can't be the only one this has happened to.

This is the second time it's happened and both times were during freezing weather. It happened now twice in a 3 year period. Both times it was just shutting the driver door. After cleaning it up and covering with plastic and shutting the door to test it definitely sends a ton of pressure toward the back of the vehicle. It almost blew my plastic out.
So definitely something with how the air passes when closing the door. It wasn't a slam either time. Just normal operation of closing the drivers door.
