My 2000 Chevy Malibu at least once a week or more will not start and the anti-theft system light comes on. After waiting 10 minutes for the light to go off, it will usually start the second time around. This has been going on for a year, but recently the car wouldn't start after numerous 10-minute delays. After paying out $94 for labor I was told it couldn't be fixed and to look for a recall. I have found no recall but many, many people with the same problem. I am a single woman and I have been sitting in far too many parking lots, all times of day and night waiting for my car to realize that it is not being stolen by me, the one with the key. I have no expertise in this matter and cannot afford to pay out labor charges only to be told that there's no way to fix it. I continue to drive it this way never knowing when I'll be stuck for 10 minutes or much longer as happened recently. Since I feel I need a car that will start much more than I need an anti-theft system why can't this thing just be completely disabled so I don't live in constant fear?

The pass lock or theft system on my 2000 Chevy Malibu. It is been an ongoing problem. Every three starts I have to wait 10 minutes to start my car. This is a stupid feature, and GM should discontinue it. I have not yet fixed the problem, but was estimated $500 plus parts to fix.

I own a 2000 Chevy Malibu that has a passlock (theft system) that will set off at odd times and not start my car for 10min or longer depending on the day!!! I called a dealership today to find out how much repair would be for this problem and was told it would be between $400-$800. I have owned my car for almost 3 years and have been having this problem with it since I drove it off the lot, but in the last week it has gotten worse.

Auto theft system light starts blinking and car will not start. Car will not start until 10 minutes later. If car does not start after this, it will take another 10 minutes before you can try to start it again. This has been happening since I bought in 2001. Will leave me stranded everywhere.

Passlock anti theft light comes on mainly on humid days and the car will not start for at least a ten minute wait. Sometimes we have to wait 2 or 3 times. I believe GM should put out a recall since thousands of other people out there are having the same problem with this car.

I would like to report the problem im having is with my wife's 2000 Chevy Malibu, and from what I have been reading this will cause a number of deaths and crashes if not already but no one has figured it out yet. The car will not start at the most important time maybe when she may one day may be trying get away from a rapist or a murder. And no I am not the only one there are over thousands of people like someone child or wife that is right at this moment stuck on the side of the road, or maybe the car turn off on I-95 while they were doing 70 on the interstate with a 18 wheeler moving at the same speed that could not stop because of the problems with the anti-theft system and ignition switch. To the point the car will cut off when you are driving it down the road without no warning, and if you make it safe to where you are going the car will not start if you try to. You have to wait 10 min. To try to start it. There many people out there having this problem Chevy is not help out any. It will not give a trouble code, so they skip around with uneeded repairs. Something needs to be done this is a big problem. And who is to say how many people that many have been hurt or killed because of this that may not known about this. It is a death trap and needs to have a look into. Thanks

Malibu

In hot and humid or wet weather, my 2000 Chevy Malibu's passlock system goes into fail safe/standby mode when I attempt to start the vehicle which renders my vehicle unable to start for a minimum of 10 minutes. This has left me innumerable times stranded for 10 minutes in rather dangerous locations such as ill-lighted parking lots after dark. The frequency of these failures recently began to increase, so I researched information about the possibility of disabling the anti-theft system that fails to do little more than cause a headache for my mechanics. To my dismay, I found that Chevy's passlock system cannot be overridden by any method short of a do-it-yourself re-wiring project. To have the problem fixed temporarily, I could have the entire ignition system replaced by Chevrolet for somewhere in the neighborhood of $450. Note that I said temporary because from the stories of those who have had the repair done, it will need to be done again a few years later as the ignition wears down once more. I am also concerned by stories I hear about further problems that drivers have had with the passlock system where the car engine turns itself off while being driven and requires that the driver pull over to restart the vehicle. I hope this never happens to me. Given that this has been happening to every model of car that has had this passlock system in place since passlock's inception, I am surprised that there have been no recalls made by Chevrolet in almost 10 years. It would seem that Chevrolet is more interested in profiting from continually repairing a system that we could just get rid of and not in the safety of its consumers. Therefore, I ask that you please mandate a recall on all Chevrolet's with the passlock anti-theft system.

I have a 2000 Chevy Malibu that has had a number of problems with turn signals and general other safety related concerns. Now on multiple occurances the car will not start with the oem key and wireless controller. The "theft system" light turns on sporadically leaving me unable to start the car... the car cranks but the theft system disables the car from turning over or fully starting. I have sent the car into the shop several times where they were unable to replicate the problem. Now they finally "pinned down" the issue and are requesting over $800 to replace the ingition module. I have read enough about this issue on forums and the auto repair (non-dealership) has admitted to "fixing" this problem on many mailbu's prior to mine. I have been stranded several times, incurred over $375 in towing and auto shop expenses...

The car began locking up with the theft system" light blinking. The car will not crank until you waited 10 minutes for it to stop blinking. This can happen two or three times in a row, at least once a day. I have been told there is no way to fix it.

GM passlock (anti-theft) feature malfunctions while starting a warm engine. Engine almost never fails to start when either the engine is hot or the engine is cold. Recently, I have had to abandon a 2000 Malibu on two occasions for failure to start after multiple "10 minute waits" and come back the next day to start the car. Failure of the engine to start could result in injuries or death depending on the situation and location. Consider an elderly person that has to abandon their vehicle on the side of a rural road at night and have to walk a long distance in extremely cold weather.

My car will not start when the theft security light comes on. This is dangerous since I am a single parent and become stranded with my children inside the car with me or have to pick my children up and they have to wait alone outside because I am so late. Today, my car has not started for over one hour. It is still sitting in the parking lot unable to start because of the security theft system. I wish this would be recalled, and hope that people don't have to start dying for it to be recalled. Looking online about this problem, I have noticed that there are thousands of complaints filed on forums. I believe that if everyone knew the proper channel to complain to, that this problem would no longer exist. My ABS light comes on everyday. I have had the sensor leads changed twice and it still comes on. My air conditioning was fine until this summer when I needed it. Are these cars now designed to break down and be unreliable just so that the dealers can charge money for diagnostics and mechanical repair" I am so frustrated and hope that you can see how dangerous this can be. I bought this car because I wanted a reliable, dependable vehicle for myself and children, what will it take to recall this problem" will I receive acknowledgement of receipt of this complaint. I thank you in advance for your time and consideration to this very urgent matter. There was a recall on the hazard switch because it didn't always work, it didn't always allow for the turn signals to work either. I doubt that there were any deaths from this problem, and it was recalled. Does someone have to die in an accident as a result of a problem with a vehicle before it will be recalled. Please send me any additional information you may have about who to file additional complaints with so that I can direct my concerns to other state or federal agencies as well.
