Upon starting the 2000 Chevy Malibu, the power windows wouldn't work, the fuel gauge read as empty, the gear indicator didn't light up. This problem continued for up to 2 minutes, then everything would come on. The "service vehicle soon" light would come on intermittently and eventually the "check engine" light came on. We took it to a certified mechanic who determined that a faulty ignition switch was the cause of the problem.

At approx. 10,000 miles, the engine would stop without warning or trouble lights. At night, the headlights would still be on when the tachometer dropped to zero. It would be triggered by bumps in the road. Dad, 88, was worried. Known problem with this car which has dash mounted ignition switch but never recalled. Detent in switch is poor. With minor wear, a large amount of keys causes the switch to move approx. 1/8 inch counterclockwise, shutting the car without any dash light indication. New switches are not improved. You can only have one key on chain so as not to disturb the switch rotation due to the poor detent exact date of first service not available. Car is on the third switch.
