I had just taken a 20 mile trip to the Suburbs from the City. I parked the car at a local church to ask for directions....I turned it off while I chatted with someone. Then, went back to car after 5 minutes, started it fine, then with NO warning , the car began to sputter just as I placed vehicle in drive and started to hit the gas pedal. It then stalled out. It never restarted. Tried for a few minutes, but did not want to flood it. Waited 30 min, tried again and nothing. It was trying to crank, but I NOTICED I did not hear the fuel pump do its usually engagement sound when you turn the key into the labeled ON position just before fully starting. This told me that it was likely the pump or the pump relay (which is only $20 and wishful thinking). I also know I had all standard maintenance done in the previous 3 months. New battery, alternator that was tested good, new spark plugs,spark plug wires, fuel system cleaning, and fuel filter 3 months prior to this. The most unfortunate part was the repair shops in that suburb were already closed. So, I had my friend pick me up, went to his house while car sat in church lot until the next morning. Called around to local shops with towing. Got car to a shop 2 miles away by 8:30am, the local shop said they would tow it for FREE within 5 miles if they were authorized to repair it. That was good. They diagnosed it within an hour, said it was indeed fuel pump. Original quote $450 and up to 3 hours. Got a call in 2 hours, and only charged me $400. WOW. I tipped them $20 to local kids' baseball fundraiser, since towing was free and charge was such a deal. Also called shops in the City, all would have charged $550-675. It all worked out for me, good deal, good friend, nice people. Demographics: 25 y.o. male, new Chicago teacher. I still love my malibu with 138,000 going strong!! Many road trips 500-1000 miles at times.....with NO issue. NOTE 1: Shop also told me this is a common issue with older GM malibu, impala, sunbird, grandam. Many times even BEFORE 100,000 miles. NOTE 2: I had this same thing happen to back when I was 16, with my 1991 Mercury Sable (Taurus). Cheers!!

well yesterday i had a call from my mother in law saying her car died out at the end of her drive way so she wanted me to take a look to see what was wrong well any ways i did. i got in her car an turned the key to hear the fuel pump run there was nothing so i went an got her a new one brand new put it in hooked up all the lines right and still wont run so i checked to see if the fuel was going to the engine it is now im f*cking puzzled can someone help me with this problem olny thing i can think of is the crank sensor

Well, I went out at 12am to see if my car would start cus I had feeling at 6am when I needed to leave it might not. This night was pretty cold. -16 without windchill. So I get in, it starts, go to put it in drive. Shut off mysteriously! Now it won't start anymore. I saw someone had posted something about putting more gas in (it has just over quarter tank). Here is the thing, it is turning over, just not firing. So that is what brought me to this conclusion that it is either fuel pump or something to do with computer and the gas gauging system. I know nothing of cars and so I am going from ear. Anyone who has problem similar should try adding more gas first and then if it don't work get new fuel pump. This sucked cus for 6 hrs I stressed over whether or not it would start, tried gas line anti freeze and nothing happened there. I can't be sure, but I was told to listen for fuel injection clicking and I couldn't hear it. That why I think it is fuel pump. Hope this may help someone else out there!

I love this after the warranty expired. Was then able to put aftermarket parts on. My problem is, car will turn over but will not start. 1st time this happened, I took it to a garage and was told the fuel pump was bad. Cost was going to be $900.00 to replace. Said no thanks, do it myself. Replaced the fuel pump. Happened again, replaced fuel pump,again. Did this many times to no avail. Did notice that it would not start as the gas gauge was reading less than an 1/8th of a tank. Poured in a gallon of gas. Voila! Car would start. This was my cure.

Now it is doing this up to 3/4 of a tank. Pain in the a**, but, pour a gallon of gas in, it starts. Tried the removing gas cap. Tried shaking the car. Anything to mimic putting gas in the tank. Nothing works, other than pouring gas in the tank. Do not like carrying a gas can with me in the trunk at all times, but, what do I do? This is the only solution that works. Not sure about the theft light being on or off makes a difference. Will keep an eye on this.

This is one of many problems I have had with this vehicle. I have had the fuel pump replaced, then the water pump, then the head gasket. Finally I think nothing else could possibly go wrong with this piece of junk car and the AC head unit must be replaced. About six months later the turn signal quits working. I get that fixed and the check engine light starts coming on and the EGR valve needs to be replaced. Now I think I may be close to having almost everything working all at once.... but my rear defrost has just bit the dust. As soon as I can trade this car in and not lose more money I will be so happy to see it go... Oh yeah and I almost forgot it seems that the entire hood has little tiny dots of missing paint (maybe it will hold up a little longer).
