Ok, so my Land Rover took a dump and My Mother has a 2001 Chevy Malibu with (at the time the problem first happened) 39,000 miles - she hardly ever drove the thing, to the store, to the doctor, to visit her grandchildren and sometimes parked for weeks at a time.
I borrowed it until we could get to a place in time where we could look at fixing the rover. well.... One day I hop in and the thing does not start. I work roughly 45 miles away and it is now abandonded in our work parking lot (a co-worker gave me a ride home) and that night I google all the possibilities because I was like, "There is only 39k on the thing, wtf..."...
After a couple of hours I googled upon this complaint site and read about "...the 10 minute fix"... curiously I took that information with me when I finally got back to the work parking lot and sure enough after leaving the key in the "On" position for 10 minutes, off for 5 seconds, it would then start.
Euuurrreeeeeka, I thought! At least I don't have to spend hundreds of dollars to fix the fuel pump, etc.
The car started normally for like a week, or so, would act up again and after waiting 10 - 15 mins would sometimes start. Repeating the process some days like 4 - 5 times and eventually start.
What A ROYAL PAIN IN THE CAZOOOOOOOOOOO
I hate this vehicle and now when I get the Rover fixed and I need to hand this over to my Mother (74 years old) will she get stranded somewhere and not be able to get it to start too?
Ridiculous!
I tried the bypass thingy with the yellow wires and switch (I did not connect switch with car running, because I did not want to die of carbon dioxide poisining while performing the process) and it would not start. The car stayed at work for over a week.
I had a friend tow it to his place to replace the fuel pump. he messed with the remote control by locking, unlocking and of course it started for him. He tested the fuel pump, NOT THE PROBLEM. It Is The &$%*#^@! Theft System that disables your ability to start the car if it "Detects" a theft, or thinks somone is tampering with it.
THE VEHICLE HAS FULL COVERAGE INSURANCE, Let Someone Steal It and GOOD LUCK WITH THAT!
Took fuel pump back to auto parts place and redeposited the $275.
Of course it statrted when I went to his place to pick it up, of course it did!
I drove home and a couple days later it dies again.... 10 minute fix worked, I get stuck at work again and a hour later it decides to start again. I drove home and on the way bought a new passlock/ignition switch. The directions say to clear the codes and follow the process to allow it to "Re-Learn" the codes. I don't have anyway to "Clear The Codes" even though the auto parts place said if I get it there, they can do it... Yeah, right... IF IT WOULD START NOW, I WOULD GLADLY DRIVE IT OVER THERE! AND WHILE I AM AT IT< Maybe just ram it through the front of your building with a "FREE TO TAKE" sticker on it for someone else to inherit the brain damage.
Not sure where to go from here, I am Soooooooooooooooooooooo Over This Chevy HEADACHE!

I had some minor body work done to my 2001 Chevy Malibu in mid December 2010. I gave a spare key to the repair shop to use during the repairs. When I got it out of the shop, I began to have problems starting the car. finally I was at drive-in ATM and could not get the car to start. After about 10 minutes of blocking the ATM machine it finally started and I drove it home and pulled into my garage. The car has not started since and it is now February 2011. I took the title and the ignition key to the local Chevy dealer and had a new key reprogrammed but that did not fix the problem. I tried the wait 10 minutes solution a dozen times and the car would not start. I tried so often to start the car that now the new battery is dead. Our weather has been so cold that I decided to wait until it warms up before I have it towed to the dealership. luckily we have a second car. I found AutoBeef on the Internet and could not believe how many others have had a similar problem with their Chevy Malibu's. My wife is frightened to drive the car, even if I can get it fixed. I can't believe that the radio anti theft device prevents me from starting my own car. I mentioned the problem to the service department at the local Chevy dealer and they acted as if they had never heard of the problem. I have already had the key cylinder device replaced once at about 100,000 miles. The Malibu now has 130,00 miles on it. I have to admit that until this problem, I have had few complaints about the Malibu. I do think that GM should recall the Malibu and disable the anti theft system as it seems to me to create very dangerous situations for Malibu drivers. Disabling the anti theft system does not seem to be a big deal for a qualified mechanic. Thanks for letting me rant on this one!!

Vehicle would not start, theft light comes on, no dash lights. After 3 to 5 tries engine would start. Took vehicle to Watson Chevrolet, showed them problem, hooked vehicle to their diagnostics machine and said you have no problem. If we can not see the problem and duplicate it, YOU have no problem. After 6 weeks and 3 visits and still no problem I took in to an independent auto repair shop and 1 1/2 hrs later problem was solved. Vehicle has started everytime for the last 8 days with no problem. SOLUTION - bad ignition switch. I requested Watson to replace switch at my expense and they NO.
End of story

Why can't GM send out some type of recall on this damn thing? They need to get off of their Butt's and get a wrinkle in their white shirts and help the customers. This Anti-theft system really is a problem that needs to be addressed by GM. I don't think I will ever buy another Chevrolet as long as I live. If GM don't address this problem they can just kiss my loyalty to them for over 30 years good bye.

Okay so my 2001 Chevy Malibu LS gets stolen last night right off my parking space!!! My Malibu when purchased has this "Theft System Light", so I'm told that this car has an automatic theft system that if stolen the car can be tracked! Does anyone know if this is so, and how does it work? Who do I contact? The dealer where I purchased car in no longer in business (Lynch Auto in Chicago). Does anyone know what I need to do, please? I really need my car and can't afford another car. I need to find my car...

This is a very annoying problem that seems to be getting worse with each week that goes by.
