It's a problem that almost cost me my life on the freeway this morning. The Malibu stopped running; I put it into neutral immediately so that I could coast it into the right shoulder of I-10, but morning traffic runs like wildfire here, and I almost got trampled by a raging 18-wheeler tailing me, even with my emergencies flashing... Once I got it stopped, it took several turns of the key to get the meters up and running and then it would stop, then shut off immediately. That kept up for several minutes until it started to hum like it normally would. I've had mechanics look at it, they've tried to find loose connections and can't find them. It's been to the dealer and back, and after its second time, I figure I can't afford to fix it anymore. There is a problem, and GM refuses to acknowledge it. I know other Malibu owners who have the similar problem, so what do we do in the meantime?

Car Dies while driving even @ 110 KM highway speed. At first promblem was once every couple of weeks. Now it shuts off every half a KM. Sometimes I can't even get out of Driveway. When I turn key and dash lights don't come on, its useless to try and start it.

THIS CAR THAT IS PAID OFF, STARTED HAVING ONE PROBLEM AFTER ANOTHER, WOULDN'T START, DEALER SAID IT WAS THE FUEL PUMP, NEVER CHANGED THE FUEL PUMP, INSTEAD HAD THE catalytic converter CLEANED AND CHECKED. FIXED THE PROBLEM OF LOSS OF ACCELERATION AND OVERHEATING. BUT THE CAR WOULD STILL DIE.
TO START THE CAR HAD TO PUSH DOWN ON THE IGNITION WITH THE KEY WAIT FOR THE DASH TO LIGHT UP AFTER 15 - 20 TRIES TO GET THE LIGHTS UP THEN IT WOULD START. AFTER SLOWING DOWN TO TURN IT DIED IN THE INTERSECTION.
AFTER READING OTHER COMPLAINTS I DON'T THINK THE PROBLEM CAN BE FIXED, THERE IS A BREAKDOWN IN THE WHOLE SYSTEM THE MANUFACTURER NEEDS TO HAVE A RECALL AND PAY FOR THE COST OF ALL REPAIRS. THEY ARE AWARE OF THE DEFECTS AND KNOW WHAT THE PROBLEMS ARE AND WILL CONTINUE, THERE IS A DOMINO EFFECT.
I LOVED MY CAR UNTIL IT STARTED COSTING MORE MONEY THAN IT WAS WORTH, AND I HAVE A CAR THAT I HAVE TO DRIVE AND CAN'T AFFORD TO SPEND ANY MORE ON IT. I GUESS WE COULD BOYCOTT CHEVY AND ONLY BUY FORDS, OR CHEVY COULD MANUFACTURE A CAR THAT PEOPLE WOULD CONTINUE TO BUY EVERYTIME THERE WOULD BE NO QUESTION AS TO WHAT CAR TO BUY

I was leaving work yesterday and as I pulled out onto the road the car shut off. I lost power steering and I had to coast to a stop in a turn lane. I put the car into neutral to push it on to a side street and I decided to turn off the engine and start it again. It then started right up and I drove it home just fine. This morning it acted like it didn't want to start but did and then when I was leaving work today it won't start at all.

On Jan 1, 2009, the 2001 Chevy Malibu broke down. After spending $900 to fix the intake manifold, we've put less than 200 miles on the stupid car before the car broke down again.
The car's engine light comes on and the car stops.
First of all, no car should have these kinds of problems with 33,000 miles on it. What a piece of crap. With a piece of junk like this you can't even take the car to the grocery store let alone take it out of town, because you can't trust it that it won't brake down again.
Give me all the tax incentives that you want, I will never buy a American made car again.

I was driving down the highway and car just shut off. I then had to get it towed to the shop, and get it fixed

driving down the road and the car decides to die, have it towed to the shop and find out its the fuel pump sets us back $700. Drive it for a week and discover antifreeze in the oil, so there it sits in our garage while we try and scrape another $700-1000 to fix it again.

Why hasn't GM listed a recall or safety warning on this. I have owned many card and this is a very, very, very serious safety problem. Someone is going to get killed and then GM is going to have a serious lawsuit on their hands. I am not asking for them to pay to fix it, but tell us what is wrong. When I am going 25-30 miles per hour and it happens ...no big deal...I pull over and it restarts. When I am going 55-65 and it happens on the Highway...this is a serious issue. No codes show...No warning...just shuts off..1/4 tank, 1/2 tank, full tank ...doesn't matter. Maybe this is GM's new business model to keep their dealers in business.....Replace the Fuel pump, replace the fuel pump relay, replace the oil pressure sending unit, replace the ECM, replace the Fuel filter, replace the key switch, replace xxxx....etc$$$$$$$$ GO GM PARTS!!!!!!!

I had just got my new (used) Chevy Malibu and while driving down the road at around 65 miles per hour the odometer lights went off and the whole car started to power down. I panicked and stepped on the gas harder.... it jerked a little and then slowly the lights and the power came back. I had it looked at and found that the ignition cylinder and wiring had major issues!!!

This is the third time I've had my car in repair regarding this problem. January, March & May. It stalls out while driving at a low rate of speed. It has also given me problems a few times trying to start. My mechanic had it twice and he brought it to a dealership - who said as it is an intermittent problem they were having trouble diagnosing it. I will never buy anything but a toyota or nissan again.

2001 Malibu stopped dead at red light at night while by myself. Could not start, no warning this was gong to happen - had to have towed to dealer. They replaced battery and positive battery cable - dealer said acid had swollen the cable and this is what caused the problem. Now the "bing bing" sound comes on and picture of battery shows up and goes away real quick. Took to dealer again yesterday. They said they can't find anything wrong with it. Am gong to put "For Sale" sign in window and sell asap.

For our first purchase of a vehicle it has been nothing but a nightmare. We purchased the vehicle with approx 40,000km on it and after just three months we discovered the signal light only works when it wants to. We took this to the dealership where it was purchased and supposedly nothing happened for them so they couldn't fix it. They told me that next time it happens stop where I am and they will come take my car and fix it. This would leave me without a vehicle. We have replaced the computer of the car because it wouldn't start one morning. We have gone through several sets of brakes not to mention calipers and rotors and cylinders, and I am guilty of driving like a grandma so there is no reason for the extensive repairs.
About a year ago the car started to stall out after being started to warm up in the winter, and has been getting worse still, stalling on the road whenever, and whereever, making me feel unsafe and very uncomfortable driving. Fortunately I have turned to a great dealership that is proud of what is sells and takes pride in the quality of craftsmanship in their vehicles which is more then I can say for the above mentioned having read the numerous complaints. It shocks me that they have ignored this problem for so long, and thus putting the lives of their consumers at risk every time they turn the key. What are you selling?
Thank you Mazda for making me feel safe again.

I Have to say that a 2001 Chevy Malibu AWWWWWWWW!. What the hell were they doing when they put this car together. I mean come on everything from the engine dying when ever or wherever it feels like, The front end as far as wheel bearings I change once a week! I just think GM should recall this whole car. It's just one thing after another with this crappy chevy. I say buy a Toyota and be pleased with the purchase you made. Instead of a Chevy Lemon. I'm just sick and tried of putting money into a car that still can not be used because you fix one thing then there is another problem soon after that.

This one was pretty bad. Later in the day after my earlier complaint, the car died again. This time it died as I slowed the vehicle while approaching a curve. I lost power steering and almost had an accident. Fortunately no one was hurt.

Car died at a stop sign at the top of an off ramp on an interstate highway (i. e. the Oakland exit on I64 Eastbound). Car was still fairly cool (we had only traveled about 1.5 miles. Fortunately no one was hurt.

Car died in the middle of a busy intersection (i. e. Manchester & Big Bend in Saint Louis, MO) after waiting at the stop light. Fortunately, I was able to restart the vehicle before the light changed. There were no injuries. With these electrical problems (i. e. car dying and car not starting) occurring more regularly, I am worried that one time the car will die in an intersection and won't restart. Come on GM, recall this mess!
- William K., Saint Louis, MO, US
After finally getting my car going (see my last complaint) the vehicle dies after 3 miles in the middle of an intersection after accelerating after a stop. Fortunately no one was injured.

My 2001 Chevy Malibu died while driving. The engine didn't sputter or anything, the car just turned off leaving me without power. This has happened a number of times before (probably around two dozen times), but before I didn't know about this website. After learning about this site, I was convinced to complain every time it happens so there is a record of how common this occurs. The car had only been running for a few minutes and we had only traveled about a mile when it died. Specifically, it died in the middle of an intersection as the vehicle accelerated after a stop (we had already made several stops before it died). After stopping the vehicle and putting it into park, the Malibu started immediately.

My car stalls after driving for a little while, there is no amount of time but usually within 2-10 miles, then I sit for about 15-20 hours and it will start back up only to repeat again! This has been one of the most aggrivating things in the world! It is so hard to figure out what it is, we have taken it to 3 mechanics who cannot figure it out!!! I don't have a check engine light or any warning lights on for that matter and there are no codes when we get it tested...the fuel pump checked out good. So far we have fixed the o2 sensors, ignition control module, coils, spark plugs and wires, fuel filter, oil switch and my next thing it the crankshaft sensors. I tried doing this thing I found on google where you reset the theft system my turning the key to ON for 10 minutes or until the theft light turns off, then switch the car to OFF for about 5seconds then try to start it and it should work, NOPE! Although this has helped some people. I am so out of ideas now an between parts an labor I have spent about $700 trying to figure out whats wrong with it! After the crankshaft sensors get put in, if it doesnt work then, then I am selling the damn thing, I am so over it!
