problem #1

Malibu SS 3.9L V6

  • Automatic transmission
  • 33,000 miles

I had the car about a month when one morning i started it up and drove the 3 miles to work and it seemed fine. That afternoon I started it up to go home for lunch and I noticed it was a little loud on start up, needless to say it got louder by the time i got home, that evening i put the car on the jack, crawled under and noticed that one of the bolts on the front pipe exhaust flange had snapped off. This would have been a minor inconvenience had it not been for the splined bolts that were rusted on there. I ended up having to cut off the excess of the bolt and then grind down the head with my dremel. I then had to painstakingly drill through the bolt due to the fact that it was EXTREMELY difficult to extract it, in fact i ruined a gear puller trying. Whats worse is that 4 days after fixing this problem the second flange right before the muffler did the same thing causing me to repeat this pain in the ass fix. The dealer wanted to charge me $100 to fix this, luckily i'm a generator mechanic and had the know how and access to a large variety of bolts to fix this problem. I only had to buy new gaskets and some thread locker to fix it. Although these gaskets are very hard to find and the dealer will charge you your soul to buy theirs, you can find them for less than 5$ online.
