I own a 2006 Malibu LT and my fuel level sensor is not working on my car. The gas handle is showing empty even after I filled the car up and the check engine light is on. I had the car checked out and was told the problem is the fuel level sensor and was also told this is a common problem with all Malibu’s. I am in the process of having it fixed the average cost is about $500.00. I feel if this is a common problem it should be part of their recall I shouldn't have to pay for it.

The fuel level sensor either reads full or empty, nothing in between. I have to use the milage gauge to figure when to get fuel. I'm not sure it will pass inspection with check engine light on. I will put new fuel level sensor in before inspection.

I have run out of gas once when I was driving it because I have to remember when I hit 400 miles, I need to fill up again.
