Driving down the highway around 60 mph when the power steering on my '09 Malibu froze. An ESC notification came on and then one for power steering. Managed to get my car off to the side of the road where I turned my car off and then on again to reset. This happened 6 more times on my 10 mile commute home. This had happen a few times before but very intermittently. After researching this issue on-line I learned that GM is aware of this problem and issued a recall notice last year but does not include my VIN (confirmed with dealer). Because my VIN is not covered this will be an out of pocket expense for me though as others have said, is the same problem. The dealer said that the issue with my car may not be the same as the ones in the recall notice but will not know until I bring it in. There may be a possibility that my VIN will be included in a subsequent recall notice and if it is I can be reimbursed for the expense.

Driving home from work, the ESC light came on then the wheel moved left to right like it was driving it self. I pulled over shut the car off and looked to see if I had a flat tire, which I did not. I started the car back up and went to drive away and I had no power steering. I did call GM service 1-800-222-1020 and was told they will provide a free 1 hour diagnostics, then I would have to call back with my ref# to talk about my options now there are other cars effected and under recall I think they need to extend the recall. I hope they resolve this problem... not at my cost

Power steering started failing at low speeds, would have to really crank wheel and eventually restart the car. Took it to the dealership, where they told me it was a "thermal error" from me cranking the wheel too much (I don't turn the wheel any different that I did the last 4 years with the car). Now its gotten worse- everytime I turn on my car the wheel is locked, and the power steering and service ESC lights come on. I have to restart, sometimes a few times, before I can drive again. The wheel also makes little jerks and noises now when I'm driving at any speed. I know a ton of Malibu have been recalled for power steering but apparently my VIN number is not included in this despite the problems being identical.

I was driving East on colonel glenn highway in dayton oh, when the electric power steering went out. It caused the car to jerk and caused my wife's neck to strain. I came home and checked and learned that Chevrolet had a recall notice for some 2009 Malibu, but our car was not included. It seems strange that Chevrolet did not include all 2009 Malibu.

While driving my 2009 Chevy Malibu on the highway at 60 mph my steering failed. There was a warning chime then the service ESC/power steering light came on and the steering was very hard to turn. I was able to pull on to the shoulder. I shut the car off for a few minutes then restarted the car and the steering was working again. A few miles down the road it happened again. This continued all weekend. It was very dangerous driving. I brought the car to the dealer on Monday to have it checked. I was told they found a faulty steering column torque sensor and the dealer told me my vehicle was not covered under the recall. NHTSA campaign # 14V153000 bulletin 14116 states 2008-2009 Chevy Malibu built from 3/1/08-6/2708 are covered my car was built 8/2008. So it wasn't covered. The bulletin says tor replace the torque sensor assembly. The same part that failed on my car. The GM part # is 232310 sensor kit it cost $216 + $305 for labor + $149 for alignment and tax for a total of $746.29. Which I'm responsible for paying. GM is recalling over 1.3 million car between 2005-2010 for the sudden loss of electric power steering (eps) assist. I believe all models between those years should be included in the recall. This is a very dangerous situation. Someone is going to get hurt. I'm afraid to let my daughter drive this car.

Abrupt power-steering failure. The steering wheel turns and jerks (shutters back and forth) on its own while the car is at rest at a stoplight or stop sign. Took to Chevy dealer and they advised me there is a recall for this issue but my VIN and part# are not included as of now. Dealer told me it is due to faulty positioning sensor part # 23232310 sensor ki.

Driving down interstate and the power steering just quit. Fought it across two lanes and managed to pull off to side of road I had no power assist at all. Turned the engine off waited a few minutes and started back up power steering was fine. Drove few miles down interstate lost the power steering again. I could get off road turn off car and start back up and power steering would work for while managed to get home and haven't driven since. I looked up and found there is a recall on certain 2009 Malibu your campaign number 14V153000 and my car is doing exactly what that recall describes but local Chevy dealer said they couldn't repair under that campaign because my VIN number ([xxx] doesn't show up with a recall for power steering. Driving down the interstate at 70 mph and having you power steering go out is a major safety concern and like I said its exactly what your campaign describes. While driving down the highway at 60mph at approximately 8pm on Feb 26, my steering wheel began to vibrate and then the driver info display panel showed power steering and service ESC. I then lost all power steering in my vehicle. This made it extremely difficult to steer and operate safely. Luckily I was able to get the vehicle off the highway safely. The next day, I took the vehicle to my dealer and was told that the power steering torque sensor needs replaced. I did research and discovered that a similar recall was issued for the electronic power steering on 2009 Malibu's, but my VIN was not included in the recall. I am unclear as to why. I contacted GM/Chevrolet and was told I am not covered and am now holding a bill for almost $600. I was shocked to learn that my vehicle was not covered. Additionally, I was not even aware that my vehicle did not have hydraulic power steering.
