This car's Stop/Start system often doesn't work when you want it to, and often works when you don't want it to.
Examples from my experience:
- you pull into a parking space and the engine shuts off, but when you put the car in Park the engine restarts!
- you come to a full stop at a stop sign for half a second to avoid a ticket, and the engine shuts off.
- on a short drive, it stops the engine several times at lights, then the car sits without being recharged, which is known to permanently reduce the capacity and life of car batteries - even the type this car uses.
- when you drive again, the car says "oh, one (or both) of the batteries is too low!" and disables stop/start for the rest of the day or more. Then you're not only using the gas that Chevy said you would save, but using even more gas to recharge the monster battery under the hood and the extra battery in the trunk.
- you're waiting to make a dangerous turn where you really have to move suddenly and fast. The engine shuts off. The engine restarts a fraction of a second before you floor it to cross the traffic speeding toward you. I sure hope that engine will always work like new, because if it sputters and dies after you start turning...
- for long periods of time (weeks or months), starting 2 weeks after I got the car, stop/start just doesn't work at all. Both batteries seem fine, one was replaced by the warranty. Now what? I paid for stop/start. I'm lugging around a lot of extra weight for stop/start: a monster main battery, a second battery, an extra pump on the transmission, a heavier starter, more power cables. If I leave stop/start not working, I'm actually using more gas to lug around that extra weight. Should I spend $132 for diagnosis, plus more for repair? Is that more than would be saved if stop/start were fixed? Will the problem just happen again?

The Start Stop Function is not working properly and is gonna get me or someone else killed or injured! Not all the time, but several times when we have stopped at a light (on a busy 3 lane road!). The auto stop will kick in, and when the traffic light turns green, we try to accelerate - and the car does not move! You have to place it in park, turn the ignition off and back on, and place in gear to go!!!! Meanwhile you have cars dodging you at night to avoid hitting you, cussing you, etc!!!
There is no function to cut this stop/start useless feature off! Some videos show to place the car in L gear and put in 6 gear when you start driving, however, mine does not have a LOW - it only has manual and the +, and will not shift unless I press the + button!!! If I wanted a manual transmission, I would have bought one. I called GM - there were no recommendations except take it to dealer!! I replaced the main battery last fall. Any suggestions?
After looking online in the Malibu Forum... there are lots of people having this same issue. I guess it's going to take a lawsuit or someone killed to get this fixed. GENERAL MOTORS NEEDS TO GET WITH IT AND DO A RECALL ON THIS FUNCTION! I JUST WANT TO ELIMINATE IT ENTIRELY... IT DOES NOT SAVE GAS AND IT'S A PAIN IN MY ASS!!! ANY SUGGESTIONS ARE GREATLY APPRECIATED.
