This problem may be covered under warranty. Ask your Chevrolet dealer.
The car shifted hard once, followed by the check engine light turning on. The car then wouldn't shift into reverse. Took to dealership, transmission needed reprogrammed. So far, so good a couple months later. This was covered by warranty.

This vehicle has been with the dealer for 4 weeks awaiting 2 sets of valves and solenoids due to the unit failing.. GM are unable to tell me when we may expect these. They will not replace the transmission, which leads me to think they fear other 9 speed transmissions may suffer the same failure. I know of at least 2 other Malibus with the same issues at my dealer alone and many more at other dealers. I have employed a Lemon Law lawyer who is taking action against Chevy.
Update from Apr 4, 2018: After 5 1/2 weeks I got a call to say the car was fixed and I could pick it up. Chevy issued a Technical Service Bulletin which was for a software fix. The bulletin was dated 3/8 and if they had done the repair sooner they would have avoided a Lemon Case... I truly believe this could be a dangerous failure and I cannot understand why GM wouldn't issue a recall..

Car was stuck in the reverse position with the R blinking but car not reversing. I was stuck in the middle of my block for an hour as I couldn't back up in my driveway. I also couldn't drive forward due to it being my neighbors yard. once I was finally able to move it I took it to a transmission shop. After the diagnostic test was done they found it was needing a system update.
