2022 Chevy Malibu RS 1.5T

I’ve had ongoing turbo issues along with PCV system problems. The engine developed excessive crankcase pressure — oil cap would vibrate and release pressure, vapor coming from the dipstick, gurgling noises, and a cracked PCV hose was found.

After this started, the turbo began failing. I’ve had three turbochargers replaced under warranty. The first turbo issue occurred around 44,000 miles, and the most recent failure was around 74,000 miles, showing this is not a one-time problem. Each failure caused loss of power and reduced engine performance.

Excess crankcase pressure can force oil past the turbo seals, leading to premature turbo failure. The vehicle is stock, properly maintained, and driven normally. GM has acknowledged turbo issues on this engine, indicating a design or system-related defect.

Turbo failure and reduced power are a safety concern, especially when accelerating or merging.

Malibu RS 1.3L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 59,438 miles

Driving my 22 RS Trailblazer (59,438 mi) up a hill going approximately 55 mph. All of a sudden I start to loose power. I think to myself, why does it all of a sudden feel like I'm driving my sisters Crosstrek?! I told my friend "I think my turbo went out". I immediately drove it to the parts store where they pulled code P0299. My foot was touching the floor the whole ride there and I couldn't get over 40 mph. Right before it happened I had pumped gas, 87 unleaded, and right then, got a harsh idle upon start. Fifteen minutes later my turbo was gone. It took the dealership shop over a month to get a new turbo installed. Supposedly a gasket was on back order or something. Luckily this happened to me under warranty, yet I am still getting a slightly rough idle 300 miles later.
