On 12/2008, while driving from California to the East Coast, roughly 3 hours into my trip the "wrench in the car" display on the dash lit up and "Power Steering" was displayed on the radio. Amid all of the ding, ding, dings, being in an unfamiliar area and the sun had just set. The next exit (Barstow) was approx 8 miles away. Luckily I was able to get a room.
I awoken the next morning to find that there had been a blizzard that night. When I got to the dealership I had to wait 2-3 hours for someone to open and then I had to wait the majority of the afternoon before a tech could make it into work to diagnose the problem. After waiting what seemed forever I got the news that the steering column ( GM 15926870) and the ignition switch (GM 15823541) needed to be replaced. One part they had in stock, the other needed to be brought in. Of course it wouldn't happen right away.....another night in Barstow. I left Barstow after losing 2-3 days of travel and dropping $1150.00 to the dealer, almost $200.00 for hotel and about $125.00 on food.
Fast forward to 11/2014 after hearing of General Motors' cover-up of the problem(s) that I experienced, and after receiving all of the recall material in the mail, I gathered up my receipts and took my vehicle to the dealership to have the supposed work completed, turned in the necessary documents to the dealer so that I could be reimbursed for that 2008 nightmare. Six (6) days later I experienced the exact same thing again. 2008 all over again!!!! I called the dealer and explained the situation. The service writer stated that they've been experiencing this problem after recall work has been completed and to bring it in on Monday morning. Monday morning I took the vehicle in. The service writer stated that this problem doesn't usually happen (of course the gentleman that I spoke with on Friday with was not in) and that they would check to see if the problem was related to the recall work that had been performed when I took the car to them 6 days ago. Of course they said that the problem was not related to the recall work that they had performed, and that to fix the current issue would cost $850. There was also a charge of $121.00 (labor@ $110 plus shop fees and tax). I argued the point that I was not informed of the fee to further diagnose and that I was never given a copy of any agreement made concerning that visit. I ended up paying half.
After all these years GM knew of the deficiencies and short comings with their vehicles. They've had time to prepare and prep their personnel for any and all questions, comments and scenarios. Damage control. My concern is that when the recall work was performed, the tech doing the work didn't follow proper procedures. After a long call to GM, my issue has been escalated to a/the next step. I hope that the issue can be resolved and I get reimbursed. I think I'll be getting rid of this car. Lying tail General Motors, shame on you!!!!
