Beginning about a year after I purchased this 2005 Malibu Maxx LS in December 2006 with 8,000 miles on it, from Scoggin-Dickey in Lubbock, TX, the running lamps began to burn out. After I replaced them a few times, the plastic amber front running lamp covers began to melt. I have replaced the entire headlamp assemblies twice because the excessive heat caused the running light sockets to melt.
Overall, counting the three sets of headlamp mountings and about twenty running lamps that I replaced, not to mention my labor, I spent over $500 on this problem.
I finally solved the problem by pulling the fuse to the running lamps. Running lamps are not required in Texas and probably not anywhere. Chevrolet could design a parking lamp fuse with more resistance and lower amperage to solve this problem. The ten-amp fuse allows too much current to pass.
The running lamp fuse is located on the rear fuse box--inside the tiny storage space near the left rear tail light. There is an outer cover and an inner cover. On the fuse box diagram, the running lamp fuse is designated "parking lamps" and is in the No. 6 position on the diagram, page Page 5-91 of the owner's manual. It is in the upper left corner, just under a larger fuse.
