After complaining for 5 years to a dealer and car manufacturer about a clanking noise in the steering column, I brought the car to a private mechanic, who determined the car was dangerous, and the manufacturers knew there was a steering column defect in a lot of their cars, so they were quietly fixing the problem, but only when customers complained. I called the manufacturer and brought the car to a dealer again, and they said there was little or no defect. However, when I told them what my mechanic said they agreed there was a problem and the car was dangerous, steering could fail at any moment. Then, they agreed to fix the problem at a large cost to myself. According to my private mechanic and various on-line resources this was a wide scale problem, and the manufacturers were trying to avoid negative publicity. In the process, they were putting the public at risk. There was a technical service bulletin that informed the mechanics how to fix this problem. However, I have chatted with various car owners online, who had this fix, and they said the problem still existed..

Ongoing problems with the turn signals not working and a continuous noise coming from the steering column/front end. Have had it to numerous mechanics and they cannot figure out the noise issue, ie its not a tie rod or a suspension issue.

Steering column vibration: At 16562 miles dealer found dry intermediate steering shaft and performed bulletin#01-02-32-001B(lubricated intermediate steering shaft).now at 33678 miles the problem is back.the fact that there is a service bulletin on this problem tells me that General Motors is aware of this problems and as a result of searching this web sight I have found that I'm not the only one who has complained about this problem. This problem also is evident in the 2001 Chevrolet impola which is almost mechanically identical to the 2001 Chevrolet Monte Carlo.because this problem concerns the steering of the vehicle General Motors should recall these cars and fix the problem before it causes injury or death.

Problem with the steering column in my 2001 Monte Carlo ss, want to know if others are having any problems. The problem started at 33,000 miles, my dealer removed the column, greased it and reinserted the old one, at 56,000 mi we are still experiencing the same problem and GM will not pay to fix it.
