The speedometer on my 2005 Chevy Monte Carlo registers the wrong speed. While in park, it reads different speeds from negative to 120 mph. While driving, it does not register correct speed. This is an important safety issue. There are many other Monte Carlo owners with exact same complaint. Mine began right around 70,000 miles, the same as others. Dealer states it is not recalled or under warranty and will cost $600. To repair. This defect should be recalled before someone gets killed going the wrong speed because of this defect!

Monte Carlo

  • 87,000 miles
I have a 2005 Monte Carlo with only 87,000 miles. While driving on the highway I was going approx. 55 miles an hour when the speedometer started speeding up saying I was going over 120. Now the speedometer is saying 120 miles an hour in park. I have called the car dealership where I bought the car and they told me that it would be over $500 to fix. I have noticed that this is happening alot on the 2005 Monte Carlo's.

Monte Carlo

  • 74,000 miles
The speedometer and tachometer in my wife's 2005 Chevrolet Monte Carlo started showing the wrong speed when we were driving on the highway. I set the cruise control at 75, yet the speedometer said I was going over 100. At first the problem was sporadic, then became continuous. I took the car to a local dealership and had the instrument cluster replaced for about $460. When I bought the car, I also purchased an extended warranty, so I had to pay $200 of the original bill, however this seems to be a well-known problem over several years of GM products. There had not been any accidents while this was out, but my daughter received a speeding ticket and I received 2 warnings for speed, all while driving in town.

2005 Chevrolet Monte Carlo ls - speedometer registered over 100 mph while driving at 55 mph. Once pegged it would not return to zero, the gauge remained at 50 - 60 mph. While researching the problem I found that GM has had numerous problems with various model cars and SUV speedometer and at least one class action suit was brought against them.

Apr 202009

Monte Carlo

  • 50,000 miles
I own a 2005 Monte Carlo, at around 50,000 miles began to have problems with instrument cluster. The fuel gauge and the alternator gauge failed. I have also had problems with the windshield wipers not returning to the set position, I do see that there has been service bulletins issued to for this. The instrument cluster has not been addressed by Chevy and I have read many other complaints about this failure from other owners. The fix for this is to replace the entire instrument cluster, this is running between $450 and $650. I think this is a defect that Chevy needs to replace free of charge.
