I had to guess at the millage and date, but it's been like this for a couple of years at least. I went to do something under the hood and when I closed it it seemed to latch but I always check it because I once had a car where it didn't latch properly and the hood flew open while on the highway and wrecked the hood and smashed the windshield. So now I always check that it's secure, and this was latched but loose.
So I opened it again and tried closing it again. Same problem. Eventually after much messing around I figured out that something was sticking in the latch mechanism and by putting a screw driver down in there and giving it a push it would spring back to how it should be and I could close the hood and it'd be securely latched.
When I had it for an oil change the guys there tried to lubricate it to fix it but it didn't solve the problem. Now anytime the hood is opened for any reason, I need to put a screwdriver down in there to spring it back into place so it will properly latch. It's not that big a deal but definitely annoying and absolutely a safety issue if you don't know to do that and make sure it's completely secure. Would probably be better to replace the mechanism but this car has so many problems I'm avoiding putting money into it as much as possible.
