Chevrolet S10 1995 pickup separation of spare tire from vehicle. While performing routine maintenance on vehicle it was discovered that the spare tire was missing from the vehicle. The end of the cable which supports the tire appeared to have broken and had a frayed appearance. The bad new is that I do not know when the actual loss occurred or what damage/accidents may have resulted from the loss of the tire. This is a bad design. The truck should have retention bars to support the tire. Also, others may have experienced this problem but not yet have discovered it.

While entering a gas station, moving at approximately 15 mph, the cable gave way causing the spare tire to fall and bounce, causing damage to the muffler, tailpipe and the spare tire rim. The cable currently has a frayed appearance and is no longer usable to support and shelter the spare tire. This was not caused by any negligence. A mechanic told me it looked like the cable wasn't the correct strength to support the load of the tire.
