My truck will not shut off when I turn the key off. The ABS and brake light dash lights stay lit. The only way to shut the truck off is to keep the key on, put it in reverse then shut the key off. Once the truck is off and the key is out of the ignition the ABS and Brake lights stay lit on the dash and draw the battery dead. This is an intermittent issue. I can drive the truck and not have an issue, park it without issue and come out in the morning and the battery is dead. I jump it and BOOM! SAME ISSUE ALL OVER AGAIN!
I have checked all of my wiring under the hood and under the dash. The issue actually caused the brake wire running to my rear brakes to overheat and melt the coating on the wire. I pulled the wiring harness completely out and removed the trailer brake wire all together, checked each and every wire for bare spots and patched any bare spots I found. (As I never plan to haul a trailer, trailer brakes and the wiring for them is a mute point so removing it all together was ok) I am lucky my truck didn't catch on fire is all I have to say!
I figured after fixing the wiring I was going to be good to go, obviously it am NOT good to go, the underlying issue is still there! I know it has to be in the braking system since pulling the fuse stops the issue all together. I have heard of newer trucks, especially in the 2001 S10 pickups, having this same issue. It ended up being a problem with the ABS system, something in the computer system.
