This has been an ongoing issue, with my father's truck. It is really getting annoying, and Chevy pretty much says tough sh*t. It's made him late for work repeatedly, so he started leaving earlier, well, as he leaves 20 minutes earlier, it just takes longer for the damn thing to start. He was complaining to me about it for about 6 months now.
So, I got to thinking.... I'm pretty mechanically inclined, so I fiddled around with it .... I fixed the problem by doing the following:
1: Find the factory wire to the fuel pump, (the one that the passlock system turns off "protecting the vehicle from theft") and disconnect it. Run a single 12V+ wire to the cab from the battery, to a switch, and the switched wire to the fuel pump. When you want to start the vehicle, turn the switch on, and turn the key as you normally would.
To turn the vehicle off, just reverse the procedure.
It has been working TROUBLE FREE for about a month now.
And I cost about $20 for the materials.
I hope my solution helps the rest of the world.

we've spent $1000 on this problem and it is still happening...like again this morning
first it was one part that 6 moths later another part and so on
have no idea how to fix...have to let the truck sit until it decides it will reset itself
and operate
we've been told they can't remove the security feature as its from the factory
if anyone has any ideas for solutions please forward on

The security light comes on when it feels it wants to. Even with the original key it seems to come on more than with a copied key. I hope there is another way to fix it other than replacing the whole darn switch. Well I hope to get a response soon, in the meantime I will keep doing what I have to do to it to keep from sitting on the side of the road due to the fuel pump shutdown feature of the security system.

I bought my 2001 Chevy S-10 4WD pick-up November 2008. About 3 weeks after I bought the truck it failed to start. It cranks but will not sart. I found if I waited about 15 to 20 minutes it would immediately start about 95% of the time. This problem may not appear for 2 to 3 weeks and then it may repeat 7 or 8 times in 3 to 5 days, then no problem for another 2 weeks. As this problem continues over the past year I now have to wait a minimum of 30 minutes before it with start. If I crank it before the 30 minute time period. I have to wait another 1/2 hour. This has become far more than just annoying. It seems to make no difference if the anti-theft light is illuminated or not. Sometimes while I am driving the light will randomly be on or off. This condition has never caused the engine to stall. My mechanic found 4 error codes all related to the anti-theft system. He told me he did not have access to information as to what the error codes meant and suggested I would have to go to a dealer to get the problem resolved.
Before I spend that kind of money on this otherwise well running pickup I would appreciate any information as to how to disable the anti-theft system and yet leave the vehicle in running condition.
Update from Feb 22, 2010: I had a mechanic tell me that in the majority of the cases like this it is a problem with a sensor in the steering column near the ignition switch. Remove the column cover find the yellow wire and a orange/black wire and cut them. On the body side (not the sensor side) of the cut wires connect the Yellow and orange/black wire with a 2200 ohm resistor between them. I bought one at Radio shack for $0.99.
This disables the anti-theft system but allows the vehicle to start and run with out it. Hope this helps those with a problem like the one I experienced.
