The contact owns a 2000 Chevrolet Silverado. While undergoing a state inspection, the contact was informed that the emergency brake pads were worn. When placed into neutral with the emergency brake was applied, the vehicle still moved forward. The current mileage was 160,000 and failure mileage was 40,000. Updated 5/19/08 updated 05/19/08

The consumer states that 2000 Chevrolet Silverado was having a problem with the ABS system. When the consumer pressed down on the brakes they sounded like they were grinding. The ABS was engaged at low speeds. The vehicle has been checked by a repair shop, and was having the sensors cleaned. The consumer has been in contact with GM, and they said that they did not have a recall. The consumer has replaced the rotors and pads. The speed was 10 mph or below.

Consumer states at 44,000 miles the rotors, pads and wheel bearings were replaced. Six months later the wheel speed ABS sensor have failed. Could not stop the vehicle when going between 2 and 8 mph. Consumer took vehicle to a Goodyear dealership, and was told there was a technical service bulletin on the ABS brakes. Number not available. Consumer was going to call General Motors today. The problem occurred regularly.

Contact stated: Contact was having a problem with emergency brake. The emergency brake fell apart into pieces. The repair shop replaced the brake shoe pad and the rear rotors. Also, the dealer had to replace the monitor speed sensor which indicated that the ABS was over active. While driving 10 mph vehicle made a noise while hitting the brakes. It almost caused an accident when the ABS was applied.

Intermittently the brake pedal hardened after applying the brakes several times while driving. This caused extended stopping distance, and vehicle did not stop. Vehicle was taken to the dealer, who replaced both rear drums and brake pads. However, the problem recurred. When the consumer turns the vehicle at a 90 degree angle the brakes only go down about 1 or 2 inches and are hard to push down any further. The brakes do not stop the vehicle. The consumer had to stomp on the brakes 2 to 5 times for them to stop the vehicle.

While driving and applying the brakes pedal went to the floor, causing pulsation and extended stopping distance. Vehicle was taken to the a independent shop, and mechanic determined that four rotors and pads needed to be replaced at consumer's expense. The vehicle had only 41000 miles on it.

When the brakes were applied, the consumer felt a vibration in the pedal. The dealer examined the vehicle and claimed that the rotors needed to be turned and the pads needed to be replaced. The consumer checked the pads and rotors and found that the pads were ok and that the rotors were laminated and cracked.

Previously, vehicle was examined by a certified mechanic after the consumer felt a pulsing and vibration coming from the wheels, and the aforementioned problem was discovered. 2000, Chevrolet Silverado K1500 truck - rear brake rotors failed at 14,000 miles on new vehicle purchase. Replaced by dealer, and failed again after only 9,000 miles. Rotors rusted from the inside of metal outward. Appears that rear brake design or rotor parts quality is defective. Normal expected life of rear brakes is typically 50,000 to 75,000 miles. Dealer confirms that GM has had problems with this model. Contacted GM customer service but to no avail at this point.

The rear brake rotors are flaking away in layers. The owner found this out when the truck was taken in for state inspection. Nlm the brake pads and rotors were worn out prematurely and the dealer replaced it.

While slowing for a stop sign, consumer heard a grinding noise coming from the right side of the vehicle, dealer found the rear, right side inner brake shoe was missing, backing plate had skored the rotor, outer brake pad and left rear brake pad had 3/8" of pad left, dealer replaced rear pads and both rotors, free of charge.
