My ABS has been acting up, I.e. engaging when it shouldn't. tonight, I was forced to come to a fast stop and pushed the brake in. The ABS engaged, but then stopped and the pedal went to the floor, therefore I had no brakes. I rear-ended another car with a 17 year old girl driving. She ended up being taken to the hospital. I am curious to know if there are other cases such as this, including brake failure and ABS problems. My vehicle is a 2000 Chevrolet Silverado 1500. I have 106,000 miles on it and have had minute braking issues for the past year or so. I hope that is this is an issue that it can be addressed. That way no more seventeen year old girls get hurt, and no more 26 year old males (myself) have to worry about them or the safety of others due to this type of failure. As far as the question about oem, if that means aftermarket equipment, then no, all my equipment came on the vehicle when I purchased it and nothing has been altered in any way.

This occurred on Saturday, 1/31/04. Vehicle make: 2500 Chevrolet Silverado, 3/4 ton, 6' bed, 6L engine description: I had to make a tight right hand turn from a gas station onto the main road in syracuse, New York as opposing traffic was coming at me. After I completed the turn and started to head South on the main four lane road I immediately found out that the power steering was quite rough. Quite rough was not the word for it as there was no power steering! about a block from that point I had to brake and found out that there were no power assisted brakes on the vehicle. No idiot lights came on at all and this presented quite a serious problem especially with the snow plow attached. Both the fluid in the master brake and power steering cylinders were right up to normal levels and the serpentine belt was relatively new and intact! trust me that I am not happy about this at all from a vehicle that has only 30,000 miles on it and has been plagued with various major problems throughout its somewhat youthful history including two (2) full brake jobs to date. I'm just thankful that no one was hurt including myself. I want this letter to be relayed to the Chevrolet zone manager and I would like their input on the issues that have been presented. As a consumer there is no way that both the power steering and brakes should have gone at the same time, plus, the fact that there were no indications of a major problem from the message center or dashboard. There very easily could have been a different ending to this story especially with the type of winter weather and road conditions we have been having as of late here in upstate New York.

Power assist went out on steering and brakes.

The hydraulic pump was inoperative. While backing the vehicle out of driveway, the hydraulic pump failed to work. Manufacturer was contacted, and stated they would look at it. But consumer had not heard anything about it. The hydraulic pump shaft severed while the consumer was driving. The vehicle had become impossible to steer. The mechanic stated this wasn't the first incident with this make/model.

While traveling at 5 mph power steering and power brakes went out at same time. Dealership examined vehicle and determined that there was a broken shaft in power steering pump that caused a loss of these two power assisted systems. Conusmer states he was advised by dealership that this is a common problem with these types of vehicle's.

Was backing vehicle out of garage when something happened to power assist on steering. Also, had no power brakes. Everything had locked up. Noticed steering fluid on garage floor. Contacted dealership, and was informed by service manager vehicle will be towed. Dealer stated that consumer may have had foot on brake and went through safety zone on hydro booster cauing fluid to foam up and cause this problem.

Likely failure of braking system. Hydraulic (brake) fluid reservoir is free to flop around on mounting. Braking system must ultimately fail do to ultimate failure of the seal(s) around the base of this plastic reservoir. Evidence of failure would be in the form of corrossion (rust), water, and air in the system or loss of break fluid, depending on wheather or not the failure is do to internal and/or external failure of the seals. If the vehicle is used on rough roads or in climates w/extreme temperature variations are present, the failure will be much quicker. Failure will be in the form of total loss of brakes, brake fade, and poor stopping power. It will totaly confuse any ABS system in use do to inconsistent/erratic brake performance. All of these conditions have already been reported by various individuals on prior years trucks. Why hasn't this reservoir been investigated as to the effects of its leaking in the form of being albe to suck air/moisture into the brake system or loosing fluid to the atmosphere?? regardless, failure is inevitable, as dynamic seals must utimately fail, and something should be done to eliminate this weak point in this system. If I am wrong, and it has been investigated and determined to be safe, please let me hear from you as I am very concerned about my family's safety where this matter is concerned!

Transmission shudder, forward or reverse, immediately after releasing foot brake to begin acceleration. Then between 18 and 25mph there is a vacuum leaking sound - whistle.
