Fuel Guage registers Empty and "low fuel light" is illuminated. This is after filling the truck completely full. Somewhere around 1/2 tank, I assume) the light will go out and the gauge will read accurately. Shortly thereafter it will register empty again and the idiot light will again illuminate.This seems to be a well documented problem and Chevrolet should 1.) admit the problem and 2.) fix the problem with a recall. How many years has this problem been around and they do nothing to show that they can take care of their mistakes and do the right thing. I don't mind paying for products that work and it being a "name" brand. But the "name" it has become is "undependable". Cmon Chevy

Can't believe that GM has not sent out a service bulletin on this problem. Starting to loose faith in GM. If they would even cover costs for parts, I would cover the labor.

The light and gas gauge indicated empty suddenly while idling one day. I moved forward and then it came back to life. A week later and I was at a stop light and it did the same thing; when the light changed I went forward and it went away. Over the next two months this began to increase it's frequency. Then it would happen and moving forward didn't make it go away. I've looked up the problem and found that most people just track their mileage on the trip meter and rely on that for the need to refuel. Now that I've had this problem for over a year I have noticed a bit more of a pattern to the problem. it happens more often when the tank is full and when the tank is low. It can practically go away when it is half a tank. I have understood it was too expensive to repair for what is an inconvenience. If it is something that should be covered by a recall to resolve the problem. If anyone else has had this problem and suggested fix or repair cost involved I would be interested in knowing the outcome.

never fully know how much fuel is in the tank.............each time i purchase fuel, the gas gauge goes wild for several minutes and when i stop at red lights, it reads "low fuel" and it seems like the more fuel i get the more prone it is to act up. guess i will drop the tank and replace sending unit myself as 600-700 bucks seems outrageous to pay for something that should have been long since recalled!

Furl indicator was inaccurate so the fuel sending unit had to be replaced. And the new car manufactures wonder why people are not buying new cars, JUNK cheap plastic parts , constant breakdowns, and the runaround at the dealership!!!!

Completely dissatisfied with this garbage truck. Have had it for a year, driven about 40,000km and it has broken down on me while driving 4 times. I always service the truck and keep it in good condition. I have replaced the front wheel bearings already (the front left I have already replaced 2 times!), thermostat, pitman arms, 2 u-joints!, serp belt and tensioner, rear leaf spring (and I never over load the bed), and there are other more annoying things that I have fixed also (like front bulbs ever 4-5 months, and dash board bulbs which is a real hassle). As far as the gas gauge goes, its never worked properly ever since I have owned the truck, the only way to fix it is a costly and timely process of taking the bed off and replacing the sending unit because the bright engineers at GMC thought it would be a good idea to put it right in the gas tank, I guess this saved them lots of money.... I used to dive a Honda civic which was 20 years old, I had it for 5 years and the only thing I had to replace was an alternator at 230,000km. I bought this truck for my landscaping company and have lost way too much time not working, but sitting in the garage waiting room.... Like a rock? I think not. Will NEVER buy another GMC

When I have a 1/2 tank gauge works great. If I have full tank it has problems... sometimes it shows empty, half or full depends on the mood of the truck I guess!
I have to use my mileage in order to keep from running out of gas..
When I have I guess 1/4 or less " how do you tell when the gauge don't work"
The gauge will go from 1/2 to fuel light coming on when I touch brake pedal or switch the trans.

I'm with the guy who wants to start up a class action suit. This is getting ridiculous and the dealers are not making it any better. My fuel gauge is misreading and both my ABS & Brake light are on. When I went to the dealer and mentioned the fuel gauge issue he instantly said "Oh yeah that's a problem with the "cluster" and is covered if the truck is a 2003 or newer. My truck is a 2001, the cost to replace the cluster was 700.00. Only it didn't fix a damn thing. Gauge is still bouncing and brake lights are still on. Now they (dealer) tell me it's probably the fuel level sensor. Repair estimate almost $600.00. PROBABLY!? R U KIDDING? (not to mention the brake light issue estimate: $2100.00, seems I need a new EBCM module.)
After reading all these other people having the SAME problems, I am appalled, with the economy in the shape its in, they're allowing such crappy manufacturing to go uncorrected. GM what the hell are you waiting for??????? Do the right thing for Gods sake, Issue the freaking RECALL already before we all go broke. I used to be 110% PRO Chevy but now I will never buy another GM product again. Sad isn't it?

The fuel gauge is lazy and goes to empty when I still idle (even at a red light) then as soon a move forward a bit then it 'wakes' back up. As many occurances and I see here on AutoBeef this should be obvious there is a design problem or defective components that should be recalled. Chevrolet, please call me when you are ready to stand behind your product and fix the problem. [The heartbeat is weak and needs a jolt to bring it back to life]

Gauge goes to empty when sitting still or on smooth road. When hitting a bump can make it register. When tank is filled, it does not show full, but a little past half full.

My gas gauge will go to empty in park if my truck is running or if im stopped at a stoplight for an extended period of time and sometimes when i turn my truck on it will do it too and it usually goes back up when i start going but sometimes it doesnt do taht and in that case i can be driving down the road and shift to nuetral and it will go back up. anyone know the solution to this?

This issue should be a recall item and GM is making a big mistake by not recognizing this issue. Infiniti is replacing fuel sending units on QX56 and other models for the same reason because they know how dangerous this can be. Get with it GM and fix these trucks! Whatever happened to "Silverado is the longest lasting, best built truck in America and it's built like a rock!".

My gas gauge has decided it will work when it feels like it. I have to use the trip odometer to keep an eye on my fuel level. From what I understand this isn't uncommon.

Same as other complaints, full tank of fuel but shows empty then jumps to full then will drop down to empty, I go by the trip miles and wait until it goes back to correct reading in order not to run out of fuel. I won't buy another Chevy.

Chevy your making Toyota look good because at least they are admitting their faults. The fuel gauge shows empty which is not true.

Like the rest of you, My gas gauge fluctuates wildly. When I fill the truck up the low fuel light comes on. After I drive 30-40 miles it settles down and seems mostly accurate but occasionally will say low fuel. I've learned to reset my trip odometer and refuel at 300 miles because I just can't stand the thought of spending $600-1000 to have this fixed.
The problem is I am trying to sell my truck and it is going to knock my sale price down. I wish Chevy would admit it is a problem because we deserve better Damn it!

Have to use odometer to know when to fill up with gas. Can go about 300 between fill ups. Was told it would cost about $600 to drop gas tank and repair.
