The Chevy Silverado 1500 front differential all have known failure issues and mine is no different.
During scheduled maintenance and inspections my mechanic began noticing small amounts fine metal flour particles when screening the differential oil after oil changes. After about a year the issue progressed I decided to have the front differential rebuilt and thus prevent a catastrophic failure while out in the boonies during hunting or fishing trips...
The repair work cost $800 and my mechanic saved the bad bearing which was the culprit. According to my mechanic this is very common and well know issue for the Chevy Silverado 1500 and GM equivalent trucks.
Attention used 1500 series 4x4 Chevy and GM truck buyers and owners beware!
If buying a used truck with over 125K miles...it is your best interest to have both differentials inspected for trace metal flour and shavings. Get this fixed before a catastrophic failure of the front differential which can take out your gears and possibly crack housings with repair going into the $2K range ...
Nice job Chevy/GM engineering and manufacturing...I have got over 300K on front/rear diffs with various Jeeps I have owned why not with Chevy/GM trucks?
