GM is having all kinds of problems with this and will not help and it is all their fault.

Silverado 5.3L Afm

  • Automatic transmission
  • 30,000 miles

I have a 2007 1/2 Silverado 5.3 AFM. first indication of oil use was during a trip to Florida. Add oil light came on with 30K on the Odometer and 50% of oil life left. Concerned but knew GM oil policy was that unless it was over 1 quart in 2000 it was not considered excessive. Next few years had to add 2 quarts in less the 5K so still did not report to dealer. Forward to March of 2014. Oil light came on at 58K and again at 59K, had to add 1 quart over 1100 miles, primarily interstate highway driving. Local driving it does not use this much, that's why it did not show up earlier and it appears it get worse with higher mileage. Needless to say it was 9K and 1 1/2 out of warranty.

GM issued first TSB to dealers in 2010 about this problem, latest revision is #10-06-01-008G. They don't issue TSB's unless they know there is a problem. Neither GM or the Dealers contacted customers they might have one of these engines and to start checking. The less you drive, especially highway miles, the longer this is going to take to show up. If you only drive it 5K a year you may not notice the oil consumption until 12 years and 60K, probably will be a lot of older people in this category.

You can download the TSB Here: Paste this into your browser. If it does not work contact me and I will get it for you. You can also Google: #10-06-01-008G PDF

Working with dealer but at this point they want me to pay $1750 approximately if it needs new ring and pistons. Could be more if it needs a new engine. Anything less than rings and pistons would be all my expense.

I would be interested in hearing from you with your experience especially if you would like to participate in a Class Action Suit.

problem #2

Jul 082007

(reported on)

Silverado LS 5.3L ACTIVE FUEL MAN

  • Automatic transmission
  • 300 miles

Engine jerks when cylinders activate when switching from 4cyl mode back to 8cyl. seems like misfire but carried to shop twice and they connected a computer and drove down the road and the jerk is felt when cylinders are coming back on. The do not have any sort of fix now but was surprised that the jerk was that bad and told me this was the worst one they had seen as of yet but that several people are complaining.

Silverado LS 5.3L ACTIVE FUEL MAN

  • Automatic transmission
  • 2,500 miles

When going steady speed active fuel management cuts motor down to 4 cylinders, upon slight touch of gas or small incline engine turns cylinders back on but when this happens the whole truck jerks like a misfire or a spark plug wire is off. This was reported to the dealer before the 300 mile mark. No resolution, GM reps states "unfortunately the engine is operating as designed, we are sorry for your inconvenience".
