I had my 2007 Silverado serviced at Westside Chevrolet in Katy Tx. In addition to some major engine work, they recommended an upper control arm on the passenger side (which I ok-ed to replace) It cost $500 for the repair including an $80.00 alignment. After I got it back for the second time, there was a popping in the steering and some play. I did not want to take it to them a third time and be charged more for a new problem. Reading on chevrolet technical forums there is a common problem with the upper steering shaft knuckle that wears out. I ordered the shaft along with a special tool to hold the steering wheel in place and set out to change it. After installing the lock tool the next step was to remove the bolt holding the steering column segments together. Only problem was - THERE WASN'T ONE! When they worked on the front end they failed to reinstall the bolt and the yoke had slipped almost all the way out of the sleeve. Had this occurred I would have had no steering control at all and possible loss of life scenario. After further inspection of the shaft, they had also stripped the head off the bolt holding the shaft to the steering column under the dash. If I have to repair it in the future it will require vice grips. My fix was a spare bolt from my parts tub. Now it works fine but I have $120.00 worth of parts I don't need and a damaged bolt. You would expect much more quality for $118.00/hour labor charge. Way to go GM!
