Silverado 1500 LT 5.3L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 157,000 miles

My truck has a constant tapping noise from lifters collapsing and constant misfire, sputters and looses power. I paid a lot for this vehicle and is in great condition .I was actually checking to see if there was a recall for this problem. I took for tune up and was told of this problem with this vehicle. Tune up did not help

Silverado 1500 LTZ 5.3L V8

Late April had flashing check engine light, diagnosed as cylinder 7 lifter failure. I have Auto Shield extended warranty. Chevy 112 Medford, NY told Auto Shield to replace whole drivers side bank of lifters. Auto Shield declined but said they would replace all lifters in driver side bank but will only cover labor for cylinder 7. I would have to pay $2500 out of pocket. I said just repair 7 and if problems persist then ill have to bring truck back. Today May 20, 2023, check engine light was flashing on start up. Rough idle. Have to have truck towed back to Chevy 112! Guess other lifters have failed!

PS

Auto Shield will not cover the head bolts or the oil filter or anti freeze!!!

Number 7 cylinder was showing a miss on OBDM, mechanic checked compression and zero compression from cylinder. Took truck to Chevy dealer. Diagnosed as failed lifters and it scored the camshaft. $6300 to rebuild engine. Mostly labor @ $140 an hour.

Silverado 1500 Z71 5.3L V8

  • Automatic transmission

I’ve had this truck for 3-4 years and if I knew about the AFM before I bought it I would’ve probably looked into something else!!! I still owe $$ on this truck and have been quoted $6800 just now for cam & lifters 😡🤬🤬🤬🤬

This is unacceptable and I wish there was something I could do.

lifter failure

Driving home from work I decided to take the highway. The entry ramp I was on was very short so I stepped on the gas a bit to meet the speed of traffic. The truck began to sputter and shake, check engine light flashing and reduced power. Only a few moments later the light turned off and the truck began to run as normal but had a loud intermittent knocking noise coming from engine. Hooked up my code reader and saw a code for cylinder 3 misfire.

Did some research online and found A history of Active fuel management (AFM) lifter failure on GM engines. Cylinder 3 is a AFM cylinder. Removed the valve covers to inspect for a collapsed lifter but saw no issues. The truck was no longer under warranty so I decided to remove the cylinder heads to inspect further. Upon removing the lifters I found damage to the cylinder #3 lifter and damage to camshaft lobe. These AFM lifters are notorious for collapsing during a "miss timed switch event" from 4 cylinder mode to 6.

So now here I am with stuck fixing this far too expensive truck that I've only owned for 8 months. My word of caution to you is if you're dead on set on purchasing one these trucks do one of following.

Buy A tuner to completely deactivate the Active fuel management system. Or make damn well sure you have a excellent power train warranty.
